Why do people think this should be expected?

You are paid a salary with benefits for a reason.

Paying anything extra outside of accrued time off seems like a bad move by ownership

Well my company recently bought out another one and even though that sounds great and all, we had too many people doing the same thing so those folks were told 90 days prior to their fire date and given two weeks + an extra week for each year served up to 10.

So effectively a 10yeae employee had six months to get a new job before the checks stop coming in. Which in my industry you seriously have to frick up to now have a new job within a month and a half let alone 6.

Why even pay people right? They can just work for me and I'll provide food and shelter... cut out all that fat.

My wife's company was bought by another one that has a severance plan that is one month for every year of service, and it has been communicated that it will apply to those being bought on day one. She's been with her company for 12 years, so we are kind of hoping she gets laid off as part of the acquisition.

Because treating employees, both current and those being laid-off (not fired), fairly for their years of service makes good business sense?

Because, if you've ever worked in an occupation that values talented employees (and from the sounds of things, you have not) you need to have as many benefits built in as possible or you will not keep the talent you have or never acquire talent in the first place.

So you don't sue them later. Cheaper to pay severance than legal fees or a settlement.

OR so you don't poach customers or other employees

OR to incentive you to help insure a smooth transition

most people take that dangled carrot vs burning shite down.

Meh..... any time I've let someone go I give them a severance check equal to a regular paycheck. Not obligated to, but it seems like the straight thing to do.

So you would sue someone over not getting severance pay???? Sounds kinda far fetched idea.....

My company does a damn fine job with tough times. Have not seen a layoff in nearly a decade. The firm will try to relocate you or offer training in different skill sets.

My guess is that either you:

Are an employer at a trashy business

Or

It's fairly common in many industries.

In a professional setting, if the person is let go for no fault of their own it is the right and responsible thing to do.

No the employer puts conditions on the severance package such as you won't sue for wrongful termination.

You won't recruit any current employees

You won't speak poorly of company or its management to the company's clients.

If you break these conditions you could be forced to pay it back.
