Why buy when you can build, get everything you want, and especially if you use a builder they design it and you have a budget and boom you have a house that fits your needs. What are the downsides?

Quality control. Money runs out, contractor doesn't pay sub and you didn't get a bond. Building a house and then an apartment complex goes up just around the corner.

How familiar are you with the construction process?

Money. Buy a foreclosed home with built in equity and renovate to your liking. You come out much further ahead typically.

Buying takes less time
Waaaaaay less headache
You can always tweek a house to fit your needs (new appliances, new finishes, redo the back yard, ect)
Building is always more expensive than you think it is
You never get everything you want because you can never afford everything both you and your wife want

Unless you're demolishing an existing house, you can't build in any desirable urban/suburban area

builders aren't your friends, they install the cheapest shite and try to pass it off as quality.

building has benefits
buying existing has benefits.
you got to know how to look for quality, and builders are probably adding a 30% minimum above cost building.

this seems like the negative to buying a newly built home

at least if you are the one hiring the builder, you are at least involved in the process and can see what is being built

My parents hired a builder who sat on the State Board of Contractors. My parents gave specific instructions as to quality and found out he got below average quality materials and pocketed the rest.

Just as a general rule, never trust a builder.

My Dad owned a custom construction business for 30 years, so I have a little more faith in builders
