Lets say I'm fresh out of college and expecting to take a job in Houston, TX. What could I actually expect to pay for decent housing if I would be living by myself in the downtown/midtown area?

1500 might get you something halfway decent. 1700-1800 will get you pretty nice 1 bedroom.

The gf lives in a nice 1br apartment in the galleria area and pays just over $1500/month I think.

Prob around $1500/month for a decent 1 bedroom. I live over by the baseball stadium and pay $1400 for a nice 950 sq ft one bedroom. Not much nightlife on that side tho which I don't really care about anyways. Just like the walking distance between Minute Maid and Toyota Center and work. Midtown or the heights is where a young guy like yourself wants to be.

Any advice on other cheaper areas that are still reasonably safe and near dt?

Montrose maybe...but even the hipsters are being priced out these days.

Midtown Properties is a website I'd take a look at. They have a bunch of older, renovated apt complexes in desirable parts of town-mostly the Montrose/Neartown/Upper Kirby area.

Or the Washington Corridor or Montrose or Upper Kirby. I lived in Upper Kirby in a decent apartment on the top floor (which anyone who has lived in an apartment with wood floors knows the value of) that my wife and got for a steal because they were having trouble renting two bedrooms out. It was 1200 sq ft and cost something like $1500 our first year. They bumped it to $1600 but the market rate on it at that point was $2100 or something. That was in 2011 and 2012.

There are also some good places for a young single guy along Allen Parkway.

Me personally? I'd look in the Montrose. Great restaurants and bars, slightly older so you don't have as many crazy arse neighbors, safe and easy access to downtown. But that's just me

Hmmm lazygrove/timberbrook maybe? I imagine EaDo has some newer builds that are cheaper but I know almost nothing about that area.

Check areas down Allen Parkway and Montrose/Waugh/Shepard or more down Richmond. I have no clue, but I would think any decent apartment complex within the loop will be over $1000 minimum for a 1 bedroom. Every decent area has it's own perks people desire (Med district, Rice U, Montrose, Heights, Gallaria, EaDo, etc). Eado is prob most affordable right now, but sort of a mix between new construction and hood. Lots of old warehouses, industrial buildings as well so dirty and not as trendy.

Yeah, EaDo was the next it place before the oil slip. Now I have no idea what's going on over there. It's got some very authentic restaurants (read: hole in the wall), but it's also spitting distance from downtown.

ETA: it also has the original Ninfas on Navigation which is the best texmex in Houston, so there's that.

I live in EaDo and like it. Just saying not the best place for a guy right out of college. There's a block of neighborhood type bars close to all the sporting venues (Woodrow's, Luckys, etc) I like to have a beer at and see familiar faces, but not where I'd want to be chasing poon if I were in my early to mid 20s. More old vets like me that are still single, like to have a beer but done with the chase and putting in the work.....

Memorial Heights at Washington has 1br for $1200. You won't find a decent place ITL for less than that unless you get a roommate.

EaDo? What the hell? Born and raised in Houston, but haven't lived there since 2004. There was no EaDo or Midtown. Washington St and the Heights were shitholes, now they are trendy. It's crazy going back there and seeing everything that has changed. My parents recently sold their house just inside the beltway, for 3 times what they paid for it. 10 years ago, just inside the beltway, might as well have been Katy - That's an exaggeration, but not really.
