It's not for everyone. The school isn't easy. My suggestion is if you are going to do it make sure you get your BSN. That way if you hate the floor at least you have a way to move up and or move around more easily. Also, critical care is a good place to be. ER, icu.... surgery can be fun as well. Worked ortho for 6yrs.

it can be easier to get a job as a male nurse for this very reason.
It's easier for male nurses in general to get nursing jobs.
Unless you had your heart set on being a mother/baby nurse (that unit typically likes to hire only women).

Almost everyone I know from my area that graduated RN school in recent years either quit working or only work part time because they hate it so much.
If you don't have a true love for this career, you won't last. And as a nurse, I say good riddance to those that get into it soley for the "job security" aspect of it.

dont go to nursing for the money. Its not great money at all and especially for the work they have to do. It is a great stepping stone to becoming a NP which is a much better pay

I'm leaving the bedside next month....gonna be an infection control nurse instead. No more nights, weekends, or holidays.
And I'll actually be making more than I did working nights! 13 more shifts to go!!

I've heard you can do three month contracts at hospitals in Alaska for 50-60K. Basically a full year salary for three months of work if you didn't mind being in Alaska for a bit.

My wife went back to school a few years ago to become an RN. She was in her late 30s and had been in pharma sales for 5+ years but could see the writing on the wall. (Her employer was about to do a round of layoffs.) A good friend of mine quit his job a while back and just wrapped his first semester in nursing school - he's in his mid-40s. My wife went to OLOL College, my friend is at a community college in Acadiana -- they both agree that nursing school is a BITCH. The teachers aren't great, the classwork is difficult, if you make below a C you can't go on to the next class, plus there are constant tests that you have to pass to stay on the path (doing dosage calculations, pre-NCLEX exams, etc.)
Like everyone said, nursing is a good career to get into because you'll always have work. (After a few years, my wife went back into pharma sales and had a better job than what she had before. Six months later, her entire division was 86d. Good thing was that she got a nursing job the minute her severance checks stopped coming.) But it's tough work. Patients and their families are by and large, assholes. You have to really enjoy the job.

Seems to me you are going from frying pan into the fire....Healthcare situation with obamacare would steer me away...thing about free is eventually someone will run out of money....couple that with the power the Louisiana nursing board has over you....one slip, one drive home after 3 beers and you get arrested and they OWN you dangling your career and jumping through hoops for them. I would find something that I LIKE to do and go to school for that....Money is a good thing but it is not EVERYthing....Nurses make decent money, but not OT baller cash worth all the crap....if healthcare is your calling go to PA school....don't choose healthcare if you don't love it....I did and I developed a disdain for people, in general...it took many years for me to have compassion and empathy for people outside of my own family. I'm better now, but I throw up in my mouth when I think about doing it again...no way in hell...

Been a nurse for 18 years and I can tell you a lot has changed. Nursing has been good to me but I had to leave the floor years ago due to all of the bullshite. As others have said, the best part about being a nurse is job security. The pay can be good depending on which area of the country you work and whether you decide to work in a hospital or not. It is true that you have to want to help people to "make it" but that is not necessarily the case anymore. Even if you want to help, you can't, because of staffing shortages, more charting, etc. The whole hospital experience has changed. It's now focused too much on patient satisfaction instead of what is best for the patient. Press-Gainey is ruining healthcare. My advice would be, if you want to be a nurse, decide if you want to work in a hospital setting and make more money with more stress or another type of setting where you will more than likely make less but have less headaches. I would not stop with an associates degree as well. It is a difficult field and I know many, many, good nurses who have left.

People who go to nursing school for $$$ will hate school, and hate life working as a nurse.

Any Nurses out there looking to go into HH should look into Bayou Home Health. Saw they are hiring in BR area and it's known as a very reputable company that is growing.

Working in the medical field has it's benefits but also comes with baggage like everything else... Dealing with sick people can get stressful and tiresome.. Finding a day shift position can be tough.. Working every other weekend does suck after a while.. However, it does have good things.. working 3 12 hour shifts are great.. pay is usually good.
Burnout does happen.. One good thing about nursing is you have a wide area to go into, not limited like respiratory...

yep. one of my sisters works in a U of California campus where there is a high end medical school and many medical science opportunities. She makes big bucks, BS/RN. She does the jobs of two people, long hours. Has one clerk.
She wanted the big bucks. Her retirement will be more than most TD posters make in their day jobs. Her days do not sound like fun to me. On the good side, being a nurse let her make those choices.
