About to finish paying off a student loan and that will free up $360/month. I want to use that to buy a new car, what level car can I get with that payment?

WAYYYYY too many intangibles to answer this question with information provided.

What's your credit score?
How much are you putting down?
How long are you looking to pay for it?

Without knowing this information, there's no way to answer this question accurately.

Whatever you do, DO NOT go to a dealership and tell them you are looking to pay $360/month.

Shopping by payment? One that when you're done paying for it you'll have paid way too much.

Never tell a dealer what you want to pay per month .. Do some research then come back and talk .

You want a vehicle based on a monthly payment?

One of the strangest things I've seen on here.

One bit of advice. Never buy a car based off a monthly payment. You're going to get screwed by doing this.

I'm not retarded, I'm not going to walk into a dealership and say "hey I want to pay $350/month give me a car."
I'm just trying to get an idea of the type of car I can get

That's the thing. You can get any basic vehicle in the world based off of that number.

It just depends on how long you finance it for.

Come on man. Think about it.

You want an f150? You got it.

You want a Kia? You got it.

You want a jeep? You got it.

Go online to one of those payment calculators and play around with the price of the car and number of years you want to pay. That'll give you an idea.

I think bankrate.com may have one.

You can probably get a 2015 F150 for $390 per month if you finance it for 8 years. It's only $40 more than you have allotted. Come on man, it's a brand new Ford.

Dealers lick their chops at people like you.

Hook, line, and sinker....

With your credit score you should be able to get a really good rate on a used car. I think 2.0% at a credit union or so, but a small difference in rate isnt going to make a difference on a small car loan.

If you want a 60 month term at 2%, you are looking at $350. per month for a 20k loan.

So, whatever you can get for 20k

Well, he's right. People that walk into a dealership and say "I only want to pay X amount per month" are lame ducks. They are a layup because the dealerships can make the numbers appear better than what they really are. If you say $350, theyll sell you a 40k+ car for $350 a month.
