From a cultural standpoint, Florida has little to do with Southern political history.

It was originally a Spanish territory if im not mistaken. During slavery, it was not uncommon for slaves to try to escape to Florida (albeit its close proximity made it the worse place to escape to)

Even if you go to Florida today, their seems to be a very different atmosphere of people vs LA, TX, MS, etc.

If any of you live there, wouldn't you agree.

North Florida, yes.

South Florida, no.

No. The south stops at the St. Marys river.

As a whole....no. The more south you go the more norther you get, half of florida is as "southern" as a philly cheesesteak.

Now, around the panhandle there are some damn REDNECK hotbeds up there, but looking at florida as a state overall no, they are not "southern".

Anything north of Orlando is very southern culturally. But the state as a whole? Nah.

Go to Crestview, FL, close your eyes, and you'll probably believe you're somewhere around Montgomery.

My wife is from south Florida. She gets pissed at me when I tell her she is a Southerner. She is of the opinion that Florida is not a southern state.

I've been saying this for years. Florida is not southern whatsoever, other than it's location. KY, VA, WV are much more "southern" than Florida in culture. The Tampa area mines well be renamed "Pennsylyork" because that's this cities entire culture, other than the very minute Spanish influence that certain parts of the city still carry. It's a totally different world here and nothing at all like TX, LA, MS, AL, and GA. Of course there are hicks here and there, but even then they seem to be a totally different breed of hick.

Are people actually "from" florida? or do they mostly just migrate "to" florida?

Migrate. Very rarely will you find someone who's actually from here. At least in my experience living in the Tampa area for the past 8 or so years.

Redneck Riviera on the Gulf side. South Florida is melting pot of retired yankees, Cubans and other south American immigrants. Very diverse culturally.

This is probably how it should be viewed. Sort of like how the South LA hicks are their own special group.

I was born in Miami in the early 70s, and I can tell you that back then it was a totally different place.

We ran Airboats in the Everglades hunting everything imaginable. We had stilt houses in Biscayne bay as fish camps. We ran half tracks and rail buggies in the scrub for the absolute best Quail hunting, you wouldn't believe how good.
We would gig 300 of the biggest bullfrogs you have seen in about 3.5 hours...that's a bunch of frogs to clean.

If all that sounds redneck and southern, then I suppose there's your answer.

You can't do some of that any more, but the original people from there mostly have southern roots.
