I understand the appeal of their washing machines and was able to pick up a slightly used one recently for half price.

I'm now in need of a dryer to go with it, and I can pay the price for a matching dryer from SQ or take advantage of the Labor Day sales and pick up a Maytag or Samsung steam dryer for half the price of the SQ.

Dryers typically are more bulletproof than washing machines, so the question is whether or not the SQ is worth it in this instance?

This is what I did. My Maytag dryer has been great for years. I kept it and got the SQ washer only.

I'll put my 8 year old samsung front load washer up against SQ any day of the week and 10 times on Sunday

Well in 8 more years the SQ will still be running perfectly and you'll be in the market for new machines.

Are you sure you can't repair the old dryer?

How much do Speed McQueens cost anyway?

My washer and dryer is probably 12 years old and still going strong, can't even remember what brand. Imagine one will go tits up eventually though.

I have 10 year old whirlpools and they run great. Though I admit I am intrigued by quieter machines because of the proximity of my laundry room.

Why were you pimping speed queens earlier?

Because they're fricking awesome. Know people with them and researched them a lot.

Just buy the Speed Queen and be done with it. We got the washer this year and it's awesome. As soon as my dryer goes out, we'll be getting the SQ Dryer. When there's something that's so head and shoulders above everything else, you just do it. Note that everyone advising against it doesn't own a Speed Queen.

I went from the cheapest washer/dryer combo I could find each time mine went out (3 sets over 15 years or so - not bad IMO) directly to a SQ set last year. All I know is the wife use to complain about the others all the time. I hear no complaints now. And that's all I was ever after.

My only issue with SQ washers are the agitators limit you on washing comforters and larger loads. Agitators can mess up your clothes over time. Can't beat the reliability though.

But will you say the same thing 10 years from now?

I pass through a laundry room from time to time with 10 sets of Speed Queens all running and they don't make a sound. It's unreal.
