Researchers discovered that parents often spanked kids for trivial misdeeds and children misbehaved 10 minutes after being punished.

While advocates of corporal punishment have outlined best practices for responsible spanking, that latest study reveals that parents often fail to follow the guidelines.

The study showed that parents weren't always calm when they punish their children, didn't use corporal punishment as the last resort and spanked for minor infractions and not just serious misbehavior.

. Children were punished for sucking fingers, eating improperly, getting out of a chair, and going outside without permission. Parents sounded angry prior spanking or hitting in 49 percent of the incidences, which took less than 30 seconds to escalate from nonviolent discipline to corporal punishment.

Researchers found that children misbehaved again within 10 minutes of being hit or spanked in 30 of the 41 incidents.

"The average rate we observed using the real-time audio equates to an alarming 18 times a week," added Holden.

Spanking should be the last form of punishment, and it works if used properly. The problem is most parents now don't know how to use it properly.

I know when I got my arse whipped, all I wanted to do was continue misbehaving. Especially when the belt got used.

This.

Julia Roberts' pothead brother is always on TV crying (literally) about how it's horrible that parents hit their kids. He's a massive douche nozzle.

Same here, Stripes. Maybe some kids are that dumb or don't care, but the *ss-whippings we got were a great deterrent!

My best friend's crazy Coon-arse grandma, who chased us around the yard with a fly swatter, would disagree.
Never understood a word she was saying, but damn she was pissed, and we straightened up fast.

This. Spanking was used when we as kids got into fights with each other or acted out in a SERIOUS way such as throwing a tantrum in a public place or purposefully trashing a room just to be a nuisance. I only had to get spanked once as a child. After that, just the threat of it was enough to keep me in line. Spanking is a punishment of last resort. It was and should be reserved for punishment for worst possible child behavior.

The biggest issues with spanking is frequency of application (not using it at all or using it for way too minor things) and the type of application (when does spanking become abusive?). As usual, moderation is the key.
