A distant relative of mine in North Carolina died a couple of weeks ago. They won't know the cause until all the tests are back, but his symptoms are consistent with mad cow disease, which they think he got from contact with contaminated floodwaters during Hurricane Matthew.

That'd be very, very odd. It normally takes years from exposure until symptoms first appear, and then a year or longer to actually die from CJD.

And how was he exposed during Hurricane Matthew? He'd have to eat infected neural tissue, not just regular beef. If there was an infected cow, there would be other cows infected too, which I think would be all over the news.

So, while it's possible he did die from CJD, he probably had the exposure years ago.

ETA: I did have a neighbor that died shortly after a hurricane. She had an open wound which became infected by something in the dirty water. Though it was only a week or so after the hurricane that she died. Could have been vibrio, or "flesh eating bacteria" (group A strep or clostridium), though I was too young at the time to know better.

Get out of here with all your facts and fancy science talk. This is a thread for conjecture, rumor, and assumption.

I am going to file this away with the story about the search and rescue dog that died 10 minutes after getting in Katrina flood waters.

Which is why most people hoof it out of there before the floods chase them away.
