Technically it's written 3 / 1/3. Spaces the OP put in make it seem like it's 3 divided by one third.

But per usual, your interpretation of a shittily written problem is the end all be all.

[9-(3/1)]/(3+1) = 1.5

You can make the problem equal a lot of things if you're just randomly throwing in parenthesis that aren't there. That's why these problems are stupid.

Which equals 1.

Technically this one isn't even poorly written.

Sure it is, just that instead of a division sign, or implied multiplication, they used inconsistent spacing as the ruse. And it worked, seems as though most people in this thread fell for it.

How do we know it isn't (3/1)/3?

That is the stupidity of these problems.

There is an appearance difference between the following two:

3 / 1/3

3/1 / 3

They aren't the same.

If you interpret it as three divided by one divided by three, sure. The spaces don't really look like it's supposed to be that though.

3 divided by 1 divided by 3 is completely different from 3 divided by one third. One is one and one is 9.

Well, only one of those is presented in the thread.

Mathematically they are exactly the same.

Convert the division to multiplication, so that the 'left to right' protocol is irrelevant.

3 x (1/1) x (1/3) = 1

Every time, either direction.

If the spaces mean something, then the answer is 1. If they don't, then it could mean any number of things.

I read it as "nine minus three divided by one-third plus one."

But really, it can be taken any number of ways, which is why these problems are always so stupid.

I happened to have excel open, so I plugged it in with the weird spacing and without.

Both times it came back as 9.
