On a whim I decided to watch an episode of "Leave it to Beaver" with my kids last night. The episode originally aired October 10 1959, almost exactly 60 years ago.

On the show, the parents are depicted fulfilling "traditional" roles which were pretty much the same for thousands of years. Dad does the masculine things, Mom does the feminine things. The kids knew their place and respected their parents.

That "traditional" family dynamic seems compatible with nature and biology. But, as we all know, the family dynamic has changed over the past 60 years.

What's interesting to me is viewing this change as though you were from outer space. You have this planet where humans have a certain natural order, it goes on for thousands of years, then suddenly those same humans, without any input from outside of their planet, begin to reject that natural order.

Now, you can blame technology or whatever you want, but humanity has seen technological breakthroughs before. Through it all, the role of the father, mother, and children didn’t really change. Our DNA is the same. So what’s changed?

June Cleaver?

I’d be hard on her beaver back in the 50s.

Giving women the right to vote in 1920 finally took its toll.

What they didn't show you was Ward banging his secretary, and June getting bent over the kitchen table by the milk man.

Sure but it goes both ways. I’m a better father to my kids than my dad ever was to me.

The lack of folks failing to accept personal responsibility over the last 4 or 5 decades has taken it's toll and here we are. The chickens have come home to roost.

Those were the times I was raised in. Things were a lot simpler and the routines were more relaxing. My mother always had supper on the table at 5:30 pm , my grandmother had lunch cooked by 10 AM everyday. We went to the camp on the weekends and holidays to hunt and fish. Now everyone is going in a hundred different directions.

that's subjective. you THINK your dad wasn't better. maybe he would disagree.

and we'll have to wait to see how your kids feel about you when they grow up. They might think you suck.

This. And my grandfather was an even worse dad.

I think people view this kind of stuff in too simple of a lens and want to make it seem like 60 years ago was some heavenly time.

Lot's of men back in that day were lazy asses when it came time to help with anything involving the kids and the housework. And if the wife didn't like it she would get her arse beat and nobody would care.

Both of my parents grew up in the 50's and 60's. Both of their dads cheated on their wives, and one was an alcoholic and verbally and mentally abusive towards his wife and kids.

Thinking a TV show was a reflection of reality is insane. There was tons of infidelity, alcohol abuse, spousal abuse, etc. going on back then. Divorce wasn't as common because it was still a male-dominated society where women were marginalized.

Humanity has not seen communicative technological breakthroughs like we have in the past 20 years. This "shift" you speak of has everything to do with exposure. Everyone now walks around with a computer in their pocket, giving everyone the ability to access information with ease. Knowledge, whether positive or negative, changes the way people look at things.

We as a society have finally decided to accept gay people for who they are but there will always be someone who's discriminated against. That's where the transgender 8 year olds who identify as flamingos come into play. JUST ACCEPT THEM YOU BIGOTS!

1. Technology -- instant foods, clothes washer, dish washer -- gave housewives the leisure time to sit on their asses and be dissatisfied with their roles

2. White guilt became an industry

Lol, so everyone should be miserable all the time so men can be 'strong' by your definition?
