Why euthanize it? There has to be somewhere they could have sent it. Does it still rely on the mother/herd in order to survive?

Wouldn't really matter. Domestic cattle reject calves all the time if something is messed up with the bond. I'd expect wild bison would be even more prone to reject seeing as their survival instincts are on point.
