Why? I saw earlier that at some point today they were shutting it down.. After that point, no one will be able to come or leave.

Does their logic also apply to trailer parks since they get destroyed by them so often?

Hurricane =/= Tornado.

At least with a tornado, you don't really know they're coming. We've known about this thing for weeks.

I hope they are ready to be cut off from the main land for months. A storm of this size will likely knock out bridges.

This is the Biloxi/Ocean Springs bridge after Katrina:

I honestly don't think they understand how moronic a choice they are making.

I would like to try and talk sense into them.

I bet they bought a few cases of water and a bunch of alcohol, looking to have a party.

Many buildings in Miami are engineered to withstand cat 5 hurricanes after what Andrew did there. Newer buildings have glass that is an inch thick and can withstand a 2 x 4 flung straight at it at 150mph. If I lived in a building like that I'd be staying put too.

F all that sitting on the damn freeways for hours on end. Plus what if you don't have anywhere to go? Hotels are booked. Bring your own cot to the public shelter.

Storm surge usually washes this attitude away with the people holding it.

Wrong. Structural engineers design building structures for wind, seismic, storm surges, etc. Also, architects do not build, they design. Contractors build.

Most municipalities do not require an architect or engineer to design a house. The residential code is more strict in hurricane prone regions. The code is prescriptive, and a contractor just needs to meet the code minimum.

These are small family homes, not bunkers.

You drive until you find a place. Sleep in your car.

A little discomfort won't kill you.

A cat 5 hurricane can.

In 2005 over 100 people died on the highways when trying to flee Rita in Houston. For that reason they didn't call for a mandatory evacuation there with Harvey approaching and that was the right decision.

People are capable of making decisions for themselves and you have to be there to consider all the factors involved. If you're out of the flood surge area you'll make it ok.
