If you have asthma smoke can certainly be a trigger for you. Anytime we have kids admitted for asthma exacerbations at the hospital that is one of the first questions we ask their parents. If anyone in the household smokes and do they smoke inside or outside the home. If someone does smoke inside we do further asthma teaching with them and explain how smoking inside is not gonna improve their child's asthma but likely make it worse.
Also whenever I'm caring for babies with respiratory issues I always tell the parents that if they go outside to smoke they have to not only wash their hands when they retrun...but change their shirts before holding their baby because the smoke trapped on their clothes can make the baby's respiratory issues worsen.

How long ago did you quit smoking?

10 years ago. I grew up with my dad smoking and parents of friend's smoking in their car and it didn't pose any health issues to me as a child.
However, just really not a good idea in general. Especially if your child already has other respiratory health issues(ex: asthma or born premature). I don't care if parents want to smoke, just go outside and don't smoke with young children in the car with you.
