The culprit for the erosion is the flood control structures that have been in place for 100 years on the Mississippi River. It really isn't deniable.

how am I making light of it? Do I have to be a drama queen and conclude that it has killed an entire ecosystem when I have been out there and not seen a desolate wasteland with no animal life?

The most basic geographical understanding makes it evident that river deltas are where land grows. When you're forcing 800,000 CF/S of water discharge into 100m+ depths instead of depths of 20-30 feet, this is what happens. It isn't rocket science.

you know they constantly are pumping out the channels in the mouth of the river, right? because it is filling itself in, yet the ships have to come and go.
The problem isnt as simple as people think. Let the river flow and do what is is supposed to do, say good bye to one of the busiest navigational rivers in the world, Say good buy to all the port cities up and down the river.....Invest in trucking companies cause they are gonna explode.
Diversions are the "fix" for right now. but with those you also have plenty of issues. A Funny one i always laugh at are the oyster fisherman who bitch because it will put an influx of fresh water into their oysterbeds. It is Funny because the same people bitching about coastal eroison are the ones who dont want the land filled back in cause they is where their lively hood is. There were no oysters being farmed there 20-30-40-50 years ago. they are there now because of the saltwater intrusion

loss. I go through Lake Mechant and Sister lake to get to the gulf and there are islands gone from those lakes. The cut at the gulf used to be maybe 40-50 yards wide and now its a few hundred yards wide.

Since the Deepwater Horizon incident, oil companies who operate in deepwater and BSEE have put a lot of safety systems, controls, and drills in place to ensure that if there is a similar type incident the response will be much more timely and effective. While tragic, the incident opened up a lot of peoples eyes which will hopefully prevent something this devastating from happening again in the US gulf.
