There are many animals that live in the ocean that have not been discovered. Most of the ocean hasn't been explored. It's not completely crazy that there's a rare large creature out there.

But yeah, it probably is just an artifact of the photograph. Same sort of thing as the moon expedition conspiracy theorists.
