Down the Bayou is Golden Meadow, Cutt Off, Leeville, Larose, Galliano, Fourchon

Honestly, the single biggest thing that would make me choose Thibodaux over Houma: Traffic.

There's a shite-TON of people that live in Houma now and it doesn't have the best infrastructure/traffic engineering/planning (not that I blame them, the place really blew up). You can't go anywhere quickly during daylight hours.

Fwiw, your route to bayou blue from Thib would be easy. Take the bayou blue road from 24. Not much traffic except for maybe a light or two and what, one school zone?

I went from Thibodaux to Houma (mlk) on a weekday at 8am last week and it took me 45 min due to traffic and school zones/busses.

The cane trucks mainly stay on 308. There's no mill in Houma so there's no cane truck traffic (or minimal) in that area. 24/canal/west main and la1 are mostly off limits to 18 wheelers.

What are the "bad areas" to avoid

There aren't all that many "bad areas" per se, just some places you probably don't want to live. The east side really is getting bad. Not as in ghetto bad, but down the bayou trashy bad. There are a few places that are still okay there, but they are fading fast.

If you live on the west side, around hwy 311/St. Charles area, you're not going to think it's bad. Only problem is housing is a little outrageous in that area (although it may be dropping soon).

One of the main reasons Houma can be so shitty is that all of the little bayou town funnel into Houma for their shopping/work/etc.. Thibodaux seems nicer, but that's because no one from outside of Thibodaux needs to go there. If you need to go to a store, you are going to the same stores in Houma with the trashy people. If you live in the nice areas of Houma, it's damn near the same as Thibodaux. I've got family that live in both.

I just moved from the area to Texas and hope to never have to move back any where close if that makes any difference

Thibodaux is cool but it is a different vibe. Less Trash no go to Rouses or Walmart and you couldn't tell if you were in Houma or Thibodaux. Wait til the fireman's fair in Thibodaux it will be some grade A trash round that thang.

Thibodaux is Houma with out all the great features that make Houma

I always likened Thibodaux/Houma to the Canada/USA .

Canada is a lot like the US and people will make arguments that it's actually nicer, but when it comes down to it, only people from Canada actually want to live there. You aren't seeing people knocking down the doors to leave the US to move to Canada. Same thing with Houma-Thib. Thibodaux is Houma's hat.

ETA: Also, The Intercoastal is like the Rio Grande and everything on the other side is kind of like dirty Mexico.

Raceland, 45 min from Nola, 20 min from thib and Houma. 15 min from your work location.

I'm from Raceland. It is the most boring place in that area. Plus the sugar mill makes is smell terrible for half the year.

Im from thib and still live there. I work on the SW side of houma so i take the back roads through bayou black to avoid the traffic.

Everything said so far is pretty spot on in regards to trashy, stores/restaurants, bars/women and living accommodations. Thib will have a better crowd for you and better bars. Most outsiders refuse to live here but love to visit. Thib will have fewer apartments but finding a rent house will likely be cheaper and in a better neighborhood for the price. Houma will have worse traffic. Houma has more stores (academy target....) but i just get all of that during my lunch break.

Id agree, 24 to bayou blue road is the best route for you. hwy 182 can get backed up from time to time going in and out of houma but you should be good. a few guys i work with drive from nola and even mandeville and refuse to live down here.

There's no good answer on where to live in the area, but there definitely are some wrong answers. There's nothing wrong with living in some of these places, but there's no reason a person should intentionally move to them if they are not from there. Raceland is definitely in that category.
