Just got "invited" to go on a road trip from BR after Christmas with kids to a "drive to ski trip"
Of course nothing is planned except the brother in law "HEARD" Gatlinburg is the best place to be at Christmas time
Any alternatives to this hillbilly travesty that can be easily reached by ROADS around Christmas time????

Ruidoso NM
Angel Fire NM
Red River NM

All are resorts in NM, which I would put above gatlinburg. However, all of these are about 14-16hr drive away from BR. If you were willing to drive that far. I'd eat the extra 3-5 and just go somewhere in Colorado...Winter Park, Keystone, Breckenridge just to name a few...there are a bunch of great spots.

If you're going to be in Gatlinburg, there's skiing close by in NC and near Beckley, WV just a few hours away.

New Mexico, for sure. Taos is a very hard mountain. We like Angel Fire for the family.

A 16 hour drive across wide open spaces is easier than an 8 hour traffic choked drive on the east coast. If your heart is set on the east coast, there are some ski areas in NC and WV with more reliable snow that are less of an armpit than Gatlinburg. I don't know if you can even call what goes on there skiing, TBH.

NM and CO are orders of magnitude better, but they tend not to have all you can eat pancake houses, so your BIL might not go for it.

If you're an advanced skier you'll hate anything in the east coast. Beginner and you won't know the difference
