Since oil / gas prices are unusually low right now, implement (by a public vote) a 20 cent per gallon tax that automatically stops in 1 year. In BR, that would bump gas from 1.38 to 1.58 gallon. The kicker is that it goes away in 365 days!

You apparently have no idea just how much of the cost of a gallon of fuel is already tax(es).

There has been talk of doing just what you proposed (on the national and state level), but you know damn well they'll never take the additional tax out of the price once it's there.

frick more taxes.

No new taxes until all measures for cost cutting have been exhausted. Prove to me that there's a revenue problem first.

I don't agree with the OP, but hasn't the tax on gas remained unchanged in Louisiana for 20+ years?

Automatically goes away in 365 days is my main point. Otherwise, frick it.

Screw higher taxes. Cut spending first. That has been out of hand. Hell, I cut my spending if money starts getting low. I live in my means and the state/Feds need to.

Absolutely. But if for some reason that can't do it by itself, the 365 day gas tax could be a supplement to fixing it. Better that , than to implement a sales tax on everything which probably will never go away.

Who gives a shite if it's been unchanged for 20 years? At $1.38/gallon (the OP's number), 38.41 cents of that is tax...27.83% tax rate on fuel. The OP wants to bump that to 42%+.

The government has already taxed anything and everything, yet they continue to run deficits and add to the national/state debt. That is complete, absolute, and utter bullshite.

The answer is not EVEN MORE taxes. The answer is to stop spending money on bullshite.

"Just the tip, baby."

Do you honestly think that once they get people comfortable with the idea of paying an additional tax on fuel that they wouldn't find a backdoor way to keep the tax in place?

The only things that "automatically go away" are tax and spending CUTS, never spending/taxes.

Not really... The 365 day tax would generate 400M (based on 2 billion gallon sold annually in LA)

OP, you just don't get it. Once taxes are raise, they will never take them out no matter what. Look at TOPS. All that monies went into the general fund, but was set to be self funded. These clowns write what they want as needed to line there pockets. When someone spends 80 million to be governor, he sure as hell didn't used his money and some people are looking for pay back.

We dont have a revenue problem in Louisiana, we have a politician problem in Louisiana. When there is an agenda to pass, budget issues are the sources of blasting through an agenda.

Last governor wanted to show that he could make the cuts needed to run a country. Current governor wants to expand medicaid and needs approx 1.6Billion in start up fees. Wait a minute... the projected deficit is just north of the amount needed to expand medicaid? And he wants to propose a penny tax that will go away when he hits that mark?

So, to all of you jumping on the political bandwagon of point fingers, just realize that these guys have made careers off of lying, cheating, and stealing, and they wont stop just because they're elected. I'm all for paying taxes, but somethings gotta give before I give more to a governor who increased his staff's salaries by 20-30k.

Dude is a joke... just like the last one, and more than likely, the next.

downvote away libtards and repubtards

The above does need to be cut, but I'd start with entitlement programs.

What about welfare for those able body single people that are collecting? Like 40K here in Louisiana.

I'll see your "idea" and raise you a real idea: There are consultants costing the state millions of dollars a year to assist the government employees, all of whom are already receiving a salary. Either hire the consultants outright or hire better state employees. Also, kill all of the schools that no longer mean anything. I'm talking LSUA, LSUE, Northwestern, etc...these schools are sucking up funds and for what? No one goes to LSUA to graduate... Next, we listen to what Kennedy said the other day...he outlined several hundred million in spending cuts that can be realized almost immediately. The present government wants to do nothing but blame the past. Blame Jindal (when in all honesty, this fiasco was started with Blanco's blessing, but that's neither here not there)

TL;DR: Cut the fat from the government and the large number of mostly useless public universities.

AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, FIRE EVERYONE AT THE DMV

Oh I get it. The key words are "365 day gas tax". On day 366, it goes away. Otherwise - frick them and I wouldn't vote for it. It must automaticlly go away on day 366.
