Usually you can get the idea of how serious it is in the first 30 minutes.
I remember one or two that seemed limited and then blew up, but usually that hasn't been the case.

earlier there were rumors of 3 shooters and fake suicide notes, but it's all but been confirmed it was a murder-suicide and it's over

Yeah that is one of maybe 1-3 I can recall where the sense was that it probably wasn't huge, before it really became a much more notable event.
