I'm about to have an arthroscopic subacromial decompression/distal clavical resection and was looking for firsthand accounts of rehab process and timelines to a more or less pain-free, full-use recovery. I've talked to my surgeon, read the literature, etc, but was hoping to hear some real patient experiences. I am a surgeon myself, though not orthopedic, and know that every patient and every experience is different. Just curious from the being an actual patient point of view.

MR study does not show labral tear or rotator cuff tear, so hopefully the scope will confirm this and procedure will not be more extensive that what is planned. I appreciate any information.

i have had two significant shoulder injuries which i rehabbed naturally. the first was from a subluxation, the second was more of a labrum thing. did many light exercises with a very light dumbell (like 5-10 pounds at the heaviest). lot of stretching. healed nicely. the second one i am still working on.

there were people at my rehab place that had went under the knife for rotator cuff and more serious issues that were looking at months, if they can fix it with the scope hopefully you'll be looking at weeks not months.

If they stick with the decompression/resection it won't be too bad, a few weeks and you will still be sore but have significant return of function, if they find a tear, and lots of times they do, even though it was negative on MR, you will be immobilized for 6 weeks followed by months of therapy

Being you are a surgeon , be prepared to be out of commission

Same shoulder? Reinjure or just wear and tear?

All I can say is be totally committed to rehab if you want to have full or nearly full range of motion if a tear is found.

I was able to get back to full range in a few months but strength took another two months or so.

I had a really good friend go through the same thing and wasn't committed to rehab - his shoulder ended up freezing which required another procedure - needless to say he was committed to rehab the second time and was back to "normal" around the 5-6 month mark - (range and strength).

I'm a PT in NOLA. If there is no rotator cuff or labrum repair done it will be pretty easy (relative to the others). Will likely have a sling for a short period of time but be out of it by 2 wks as opposed to 6 wks with cuff or labral repair.

From my experience the procedure you are describing usually gets full ROM within a few weeks and has little pain after a month. Can I ask who is doing the surgery?

Had it in 2007. Definitely went through the scope and needed to be put out for a few hours for surgery.

I had the sling for about 6 weeks or so, but really needed to work my arse off in PT to get it back to normal. It took me about almost about 6 months to get it back to "pretty good condition". It was a slight labral tear.

Oh, and frick norco

Had a labrum and rotator cuff scope repair surgery. 3 MRIs showed nothing. I was still pitching at the time so I was actually upset with the MRI results continuing to come back negative. I decided to have a scope done just to look around. Went into surgery thinking there wouldn't be much to it, then voila, 2 tears. Sling for 6 weeks, pretty sharp pain (mainly at night) for first few days. Zero mobility after the six weeks. The worst part of the whole deal is when the pt starts to stretch your arm out at the beginning of each therapy session. Until the mobility comes back, it can be painful. A few weeks after that, flexibility comes back and it's all downhill just building strength. In my case I never pitched again, but other than some occasional soreness my shoulder is mostly normal.

Here's to hoping they don't find any serious tears.

Same for me. Wish I would have rehabbed more. I have full strength but range of motion is not good. Can't throw a football more than 15 yards

Got hurt at work in late 2005, Dr. Andrews did a 360 degree labral repair with biodegradable anchors. A change of ZIP Codes later and I'm good now.

I can actually throw decent now. It's been 12 years since my surgery though, and I still have to short arm everything.

Had a tear. Was in sling for a long time. This was 10 years ago. I have since hurt it again. I know it's hurt again, but it's not giving me any trouble unless I throw something. So I'm not even attempting to try that shite again.

PT sucks arse. 2nd most painful experience I've ever had. The range of motion stretches were just awful. It was hard to stay committed. Mine actually froze up with scar tissue during therapy for some reason . They had to put me down again just to break all that loose. In 05, he told me I even had early stages of arthritis in that shoulder, so I'm sure it's worse now.

Not going to sugar coat it. if they have to cut you, it's going to suck. If it's just arthroscopic, I'm sure you'll be fine.

Torn labrum. Was in rehab twice a week for 5/6 months. Was at full use at about 6 months, and at no pain/soreness/tightness about 9 months after surgery. And that was my right throwing shoulder, so full use no pain was back to throwing where I was prior to surgery.

ETA: I was young though, 18 at the time, so that definitely helped my recovery process. The older you get, the harder and longer it takes

I just had the same exact procedure by Field last week. Sling for 1 day. Stitches out this past Tues (4 days post op). I've already got 75% range of motion back. Pain is gone and now more of a deep soreness. Will start back jogging next week. Doc's advice is I will be back to normal in 2 months. I'm amazed. Don't be lazy with the stretching, its painful but critical.

I had my other shoulder reconstructed by Griff 10 years ago, torn rotator, bicep, and broken tuberosity. PT twice a week for 12 months. Brutal

All surgeons are not the same. One may be awesome at knee arthroscopy but a real butcher at subacromial decompression and Mumford procedures.

Pick your surgeon wisely not just because you know him.
