Strong can't help stupid. These people were obviously ignorant. Swim parallel to shore and you're out of the "rip" in seconds. Even an olympic swimmer couldn't take a strong rip head on.

I doubt they are what I would consider strong swimmers. Most people panic because they are being swept away from shore...just relax and swim at an angle...but people freak when the situation actually arises.

you keep returning to this. yes, rip currents are impossible to the best swimmer if not swimming parallel. it is why on the Carolina beach coast there are posted signs with pictures of how to swim out of a rip. what part of: people still panic and forget what to do or have no clue it is a rip because a rip only happens to other people never them: don't you seem to understand?

Yep. There haven't been any strong rips anytime recently anywhere on the east coast. "rip current" brings eyes to the news networks and they know that. Usually, around here, and not to sterotype, but it's a fat black person who they later reveal couldn't swim at all or was a very weak swimmer.

This quick google search makes your argument invalid...

I totally understand that. However, most times there's not even a rip involved. It's just someone that can't swim that stepped into a hole or off a ledge and got too deep. Maybe there's a small backwash they can't handle...maybe. But almost never a rip. Most of these people would not step into the water on days where there's truly potential for a strong rip. I'm speaking for here in NE FL specifically but I've found it to be true all up and down the East coast. It's sensationalism by the news networks.

people (that paid thousands of dollars to go to the ocean) STILL go in.

you can post this at every public beach entrance people still panic and possibly think it happens to someone else never them.

And I know Fla. pretty well and I have to say I think they get less rip currents. They do get more rips along the four beaches here for whatever reason.

Do you live on Oak Island. I lived there in the 70's when I was a newlywed. There wasn't a whole lot there back then.

Yes, that's memorial day. That should be your first clue. More idiots at the beach than normal. I was at the beach that day. Sure wish I could have found a rip to take out to the lineup because it was sloppy onshore shite and the paddle out sucked. None to be found, though.

dude, surfers are always seemingly clueless of RIPS. Surfers assist guards here at times.

No, I live on Pleasure Island, near there. I am sure Oak Island has changed since the 70's. Although it is less commercial than most.

This is a contradiction.

Y'all know me. Know how I earn a livin'. I'll catch this bird for you, but it ain't gonna be easy. Bad fish. Not like going down the pond chasin' bluegills and tommycods. This shark, swallow you whole. Little shakin', little tenderizin', an' down you go.

And we gotta do it quick, that'll bring back your tourists, put all your businesses on a payin' basis. But it's not gonna be pleasant. I value my neck a lot more than three thousand bucks, chief. I'll find him for three, but I'll catch him, and kill him, for ten. But you've gotta make up your minds. If you want to stay alive, then ante up. If you want to play it cheap, be on welfare the whole winter.

I don't want no volunteers, I don't want no mates, there's just too many captains on this island. $10,000 for me by myself. For that you get the head, the tail, the whole damn thing.

For Godsakes. You know what I meant. Well in case you didn't. If 'one' in the ocean has a surf board or boogie board it is easier to swim out of a rip because you are less tired because you have a board holding your body weight up. Are there times some fatass can't swim and someone says musta been a rip, and it was a fatass bad swimmer, yes. But I have also more often than not seen swimmers pulled in from rips. Especially when you can literally SEE the RIP tide forming like a mini little cyclone on a pier.

Sometimes the rip in 2 feet wide and sometimes much longer. And, before, during, after canes, the surfers are not bothered by them but swimmers are.

This.

They should put this on big arse signs at the beach. I've been pulled by rips and gotten out of it in seconds using this method.

I was just confused by the "surfers are clueless about rips" part. Most look for rips on big days because rips are like a moving sidewalk to the outside.

I agree anyone floating on anything is less affected by rips so yes I agree. I just didn't know what you meant.

I just heard from someone that I trust that the fishermen were chumming off the pier.

I was getting swept out to sea on a boogie board last May at Cerritos beach in Mexico. There was a lull in the waves for probably 10minutes and before I really knew it I was getting pulled out past the point in the picture below. I had to holler at a couple surfers who were 30-40yds in front of me to get some assistance because I would be screwed soon. I knew not to panic but also knew my situation could turn dire shortly if I didn't get some help.
