At first glance it seems like Mutt Lange is an idiot. But if you think about it, I would figure the only thing worse than being married to a woman who's frigid and uptight, would have to be being married to a woman who's frigid and uptight... and looks like a walking wet dream. How torturous would that be?

Not an idiot, but remember that producers are, as a group, the mad scientists of the industry - take 2 American examples: Phil Spector and Brian Wilson - crazier than shithouse rats.
Mutt is a recluse. The way that deal went down is - they were both traveling so much, that he ended up settling down with the best friend (I think it used to be reported she worked for them, but I can't find confirmation of that, today) - and in an even weirder twist, Twain ultimately married the best friend's husband, after the respective marriages broke up over the affair.
Super strange, but them show business folks are a strange lot to begin with.
ETA: It looks like they just shuffled to get the 2 ugly ones together, and the 2 better looking ones (#NoHomo, but almost anyone is better looking than Mutt) ended up together.
