I had a TS in the past, if you are a contractor it must be sponsored by your employer, government employee is submitted as a condition of the job if a particular clearance is required, then an investigation is conducted. For it to remain active you must be employed in a role that requires the clearance, whether or not you touch sensitive material.
I left a few years ago but my latest reinvestigation was within the 5 or 7 year window, therefore I currently have an inactive TS, non-SCI clearance.
Secret is a dime a dozen, it basically requires a background check. TS is also very common, mine was not a polygraph. Beyond that it is pretty restricted. SCI is the need to know basis type stuff.

I am black. But I wanted to get a job based on my skills.
To be fair, I am still looking into getting a government job. They are surprisingly tough to get just like regular jobs at this point.

Work as a military contractor.

if you get a job that requires it, that is how it is obtained. as in period... you don't go to the secret/top security desk and ask for one

I have secret clearance. 10 years of bank ground paperwork and they actually contact former neighbors and coworkers to verify

I would recommend applying to contractor positions as well, inform them you are willing to submit to a clearance investigation.

I used to have a secret. It was about as thorough of a background check as your average apartment complex runs.

My problem is that I do not know what I need to do to start the process. Do I have to join the military. Why are their citizens with it, there must be some loophole.
You don't get a clearance before you get the job, brah. You get hired and then the company sponsors the clearance process

It really isn't that hard to find a job. I heard Costco is hiring right now.

Almost everyone in my hometown has a secret clearance. It's really not that uncommon.
You basically just have thorough background checks done

Not sure if you know this but he is a Southern graduate so his minimum starting salary is $80k, I believe it's because he said he has standards in his other 100 threads on Southern. Also, did you know he graduated from Southern?

Asking for one basically disqualifies you from getting one. Seriously. I was in the room when they were briefing a group of potential hires for USSS and a guy asked how you "get to be one of those guys on the roof with a sniper rifle." He was quickly escorted out by men in suits and we didn't see him again. Poor dumb bastard.
