New Horizons will be close to Pluto next month. Considering the distance Pluto is moving away from us along with other priorities in space exploration this could very well be the only close pictures taken of the Plutonian system in our lifetimes.

Bonus hypothetical: NH will be racing by the planet with no way to slow down and study beyond its flyby. Fantasy question, but what if NH discovers evidence of alien artifacts or some other civilization on the surface during its visit? We would be left with a supreme mystery for years to come.

Start a picture thread and don't post any pictures.

Close pictures don't exist until July.

If that were to happen we'd be launching a steady chain of probes starting almost immediately, and they wouldn't be flybys. There would be so many landers within ten years that they'd be bumping into each other.

You can bet your arse in ten years New Horizon 2 would be pulling into orbit.

Yep, but that would still be 10+ years of speculation. Imagine the discussions over the course of a decade plus on such a mysterious subject.

It boggles my mind that technology exists from something that was launched ten years ago, and has travelled millions of miles into space, can transmit pictures back to us, but I can't listen to the radio in the Mobile Tunnel.

Incredible "trailer" of the Pluto flyby, well worth watching. I'm excited about this, hard to believe less than a month from now we will have our first real photos of what used to be considered our furthest planet and a taste of what lies beyond in the Kuiper Belt.

What kind of quality should we expect from these images? How detailed are we talking?

Whatever 5000x clearer than the picture by the poster above is. Or that much clearer than Hubble can give.

Hard to comprehend but that's what I've heard.

Her neck is a little long, but I've been drinking, so it's a definite yes. But I'm thinking that when I woke up in the morning, I'd want to go another round.
