The movie just started on AMC. I've seen it more time than I can count, but this is the first time I thougt about this.
Would Tom Hank's character be buried at Normandy or where he was killed, in the town with the bridge?
Just wondering, I know the movie is fictional.

He is buried where Private Ryan is remembering the whole story for us.
How did Private Ryan remember that if he wasn't part of the memory until half way through? Plot hole!

Are us soldiers buried in dozens of towns across Europe?

I think that if the remains of a serviceman were recovered, the next of kin was notified and could decide to bury in Normandy or have the remains sent home for burial at either a family site or a military site. We usually make every effort to ensure that our fallen service men and women don't rest in foreign soil. For instance, we're still actively searching for every POW/MIA (granted, the budget isn't huge) and when remains are found, they're disinterred and brought home or to an overseas military cemetery that is American held like the one at Normandy.

They were usually buried in temporary cemetaries near where they fell. After the war, they were exhumed and reburied in larger cemetaries run by the American Battle Monuments Commission, like the one in Normandy. Or in some cases, returned to their families in the US.

They were buried in "makeshift" cemeteries. The shipping boys home thing had not started there was no option to send them home. If there were it stands to reason most families would have wanted the body home.
My wife grandfather was a Quartermaster in WWII and in charge of plotting the cemeteries a job that haunted him until his death.

There is a cemetery in Margarten, Netherlands that honors the remains of about 8,300 of our fallen servicemen.
Good article about that in today's Daily Advertiser.

That didnt apply in WW2. Not practical to return the bodies back to the states then. There are military graveyards all over the Pacific, Africa, Europe etc.

My uncle was drafted for WWII, and at the induction center they were questioned about any special skills or experience they might have. He told them he worked in a funeral home part time when he was growing up. They asked him if he had experience handling dead bodies and he said yeah he knew how to embalm and used to lay out the bodies in the coffins, etc.
They assigned him to Graves Registration and his unit went to those temporary cemetaries and dug up the Graves and prepared the bodies for transfer to the designated cemetaries. He said a lot of times there was no identify of the body and they would take dental imprints and look for other clues of the identity.
I remember him talking once about in the aftermath of the Battle of the Bulge, when they tried to recover bodies, the bodies were frozen solid from the cold temperatures.
Not a job I would want, but it didn't seem to affect him that much, upon returning home he started what would become a very successful business. He died a few years ago.

Is this commercial free ? Is it unedited?
If so I may record and watch with the kids.
