Crazy to think that this building was standing and being used during the same time as the death of Jesus.

I talk a lot of shite on here, but this stuff really pisses me off. What is there to gain from the destruction of historical sites?

Cost:Benefit analysis can yield tough results.

Fixing those ruins up would have been more expensive than maintaining them.

Simple math.

Joshing, those ISIS folks are Neanderthals.

There is nothing to gain. Keep in mind, these sites have existed in Muslim lands and have been preserved for centuries.

If I recall, they claim it is a knock against their religion. Someone probably has more detail.

There might be a WHOLE LOT more to this, but I get the impression they are just trying to show the world they DGAF.

A ruined temple, that no one has used in forever, is somehow a slight to their faith? I don't buy it. If it was still used, sure, but that thing hasn't been occupied in forever.

They do it because they know it pisses the world off.

They are offensive monuments and should be taken down.

The Taliban first gained international prominence by destroying ancient Buddha statues.

Wiki on Buddhas of Bamiyan

It is just another example of the medieval mindset of these folks. I think that dealing with them is going to be counter-productive over the long-term. They need to be isolated or, preferably, destroyed.

"There is no other God than Allah." is what they believe. The hardliners extend this to forcing them to destroy anything which was created to worship any other deity. Also, there's a hardline Islamic prohibition on any artwork which depicts a person or animal. It is considered a graven image (an icon) and must be destroyed.

They really see these sites as places that can be used to worship idols so they must be destroyed, even if the temple is dedicated to an ancient Mesopotamian religion and has not been used since ancient times.

Read about what happened in Saudi Arabia when the Wahhabis took over. They dgaf about early Islamic holy sites. They very nearly demolished the tomb of Muhammad himself. They've demolished I think every grave of Muhammad's family and places where he lived.
