Not sure the year, but between the end of the Cold War and pre-Putin (or maybe early Putin) didn't the invite American veterans to join them one year? I think it's only happened once.

Obviously, we've had a bad relationship with Russia / USSR since the end of WW2 (save for a little bit of time post-Cold War), and it's not that good now.

But holy hell did they go toe-to-toe with Nazi Germany and came out on top. (not that I admire all of that necessarily, those 2 armies destroyed each other's civilian populations wherever they came across them)

Lol at wartime propaganda. The Bolsheviks were freedom fighters!!

FDR was a fanboy of Stalin and the Soviets. Without Lend-Lease Aid and eventual US intervention, they never could have defeated Germany.

A novel aviation concept if there ever was one.

The MiG-29 is still one of my all time favorite jet aircraft. It is a work of pure beauty.

Perhaps, but I believe the number is like for every 1 division on the Western front the Germans had roughly 9-10 in the East against the Soviets. Those two waged a total war against themselves in the midst of everything else that was going on in WW2.

Don't get me wrong. There is no telling what would have happened if German resources weren't stretched to the west and the south and the US wasn't helping the Soviets out, but the US better be glad the Nazis had such a significant percentage of their resources focused East as well.

Oh I agree the Western Allies benefited immensely from the Soviets. It was a mutually beneficial relationship in respect to fighting the Germans. The deeper you analyze WWII and the logistics behind it, the more absolutely astonishing the German effort becomes. And had it not been for a number of foolhardy interjections by Hitler in the latter stages of the war, German resistance would have proved even stiffer.

I work with several Russian ladies that tell me that most Russian citizens hate Americans. Neither of them can tell me exactly why but they say it's a true deep hatred . They understand that most Americans are to busy working and really don't give a rat's arse about Russia .

"But, I do say "frick Russia" because they are a nation of drunken, ignorant, lazy, arrogant, corrupt, tyrannical and immoral people."

So there are Democrats in Russia?

WW2 could have not been won by the allies without the Soviets. They suffered massive losses, that frankly, no other nation would tolerate. ~20 million, greater than 10% of its total population. By comparison, 2% of US (prewar population) died during the civil war.

A big ole parade right down Pennsylvania Avenue.

Do you guys realize how apeshit the wingnuts would go if a parade like that would have taken place/takes place under the Obama administration? Seriously. The military can't hold a simple exercise without the tinfoil hat crowd losing their shite, and now you want the Kenyan Muslim Communist to preside over a parade of the most powerful military in the world--which he happens to oversee? Fox News have a conniption fit.

Didn't they do this during the Cold War and a large percentage of the weapons were later found to be fake?

A common myth in the U.S., however, the data does not support this conclusion.

quote:

The Allies won the war because their economies supported a greater volume of war production and military personnel in larger numbers. This was true of the war as a whole, and it was also true on the eastern front where the Soviet economy, of a similar size to Germany’s but less developed and also seriously weakened by invasion, supplied more soldiers and weapons.

Russian aviation has been second in the world only to the United States. Their aviation record from the end of WWII until today has been elite. With novel and domestic designs, not just back engineering or copying like the Chinese. America's has hands down been number one but aviation is not an aspect of the Russian military I'd attempt to downplay.

Indeed, the Russians have been producing excellent aircraft for decades.

Here is a novel concept from the end of the Cold War that never went into production. The Su-47:

Russia is no longer a communist country. Authoritarian perhaps, but not communist. Lots of Russians making money like good capitalists these days.

Say this for the Russians, they are not exactly bending over backwards to accommodate the LGBT community.
