Runners of the OT Assemble - Advice Needed

So I'm running in the Boston Marathon (not as an elite runner), and it's two months from tomorrow. This will be my first full marathon.

Starting to panic because my training has been completely screwed due to the constant blizzards/snow storms that have been hitting Boston over the last three weeks or so. Looks like we will have one more storm Saturday, and I'm really hoping we will be in the clear after that.

My question is, what can I do to accelerate my training in these last two months to make up for what I've missed? Any advice appreciated.

The worst thing you can do is ramp volume too quickly, which will almost assuredly lead to injury. It's still 9ish weeks out. Just make sure you're getting miles in and building towards getting long runs in a month or so out. Even the treadmill is better than nothing.

Yes that's what I'm looking to avoid. I want to make sure I'm prepared for race day but I don't want to injure myself in the process.

be very careful with this. as usc said, you can really hurt yourself doing this. Just continue on with your training and make sure you get a few quality long runs in.

Safely, nothing.

What is your current weekly mileage and what is the distance of your current longest run to date and how long ago was it?

Have you considered one of Jeff Galloway's run/walk plans or something similar?

The reason I bring them up is, let's say the longest run you are able to manage prior to race day is 18 miles and you've only averaged about 20-25 miles a week. If you were to walk .25 miles then jog .75 miles (about an 8:30 pace) then you are looking at about a 10:30 overall pace for a 4:35 marathon.

By doing this you would only run about 20 miles total while walking about 6.2. The difference is you spread out the walking through the race to keep you fresh rather than just at the times that you need to walk.

Right now, focus more on weekly mileage not individual long runs....Can't go 14 miles on a treadmill on a Saturday...fine, can you possibly go twice a day on Saturday AND Sunday and do 4-5 miles each time?

Leave some room for flexibility and concentrate on the big picture.

Weekly mileage prior to the onslaught of snow was about 20-25. Longest run has been a half marathon and that was about 2 weeks ago. But like I said, the snow has really screwed me up. I haven't really been able to run due to the snowy/icy/ball-snapping cold so I've only gotten a couple 5ish mile runs in since then.

This is good advice. I cannot do long runs on a treadmill. It's like pulling teeth for me. But I could do a couple shorter runs in a day to break up the monotony.

not trolling at all... serious question for you runners. How do you enjoy it? Or do you? I am 32 years old, been very athletic my whole life. Still play sports and hit the gym. And get on the treadmill for like 20mins a few times a week. After like 5mins of running i feel like my legs are going to explode lol, like i just hate freaking running. How do you enjoy it?

Runner's high is a real thing. After a long/hard run and a hot shower I feel great.

Plus, you are doing the hardest part of running without reaping the rewards. For me, the most difficult part of a run is the first 15-20 minutes because my body is getting into rhythm. It's right about that 3-mile mark that I really start enjoying the run.

Plus it really helps me clear my head when I'm stressed out.

Given that weather can be so erratic at times, it is for this exact reason that I've always kept a gym membership while running.

Hate on treadmills all you want, but come rain or shine they are still always an available option for runners.

well its cold as f right now for outside lol, last summer i ran/jogged 3miles 5 days a week. But had to MAKE myself do it. Just didnt enjoy it. Was just forcing myself to, always felt like it was more of a chore than enjoyable. Was wondering if i was missing something

What I would do is look to add about 2 miles a week to your current weekly mileage...something like this


7 weeks out - 25 miles/week with long run of 13 mi
6 weeks out - 27 mi/week with long run of 15 mi
5 weeks out - 29 mi/week with long run of 17 mi
4 weeks out - 30 mi/week with long run of 20 mi
3 weeks out - 30 mi/week with long run of 21 mi
2 weeks out - 25 mi/week with long run of 12-14 mi
1 week out - 20 mi/week with long run of 6-8 mi
Race week - a couple of runs, all easy pace with some race pace intervals mixed in there. Keep your legs fresh by 2-3 runs of maybe 2-4 miles

I was under the impression that you had to qualify for Boston with an appropriate time in a previous marathon??

then long runs probably aren't for you

I would never force myself to do something I didn't enjoy

have you tried sprint workouts? a lot more efficient and less "boring" than long and slow

find what you enjoy so that you will stick with it

they have a lottery system for people that do not qualify

Alot of enjoying running is proper pacing. Alot of people just try to run too fast/hard and they lose the beauty and relaxation of a nice run.

For most people who aren't training or trying to hit some sort of an interval, you should be able to have a conversation while running.
