Ronald Reagan decided 33 years ago that 18-year-olds can't buy a beer

I think I remember Louisiana was one of the last states to cave.
I was old enough for it not to matter. Lots of people were pissed.
Mothers against drunk drivers has too much power. No one has the balls to push back against them.

Louisiana had a loop hole that allowed them to sell beer to an 18yo up until 1995. Which happened to be the year I turned 18. So we could legally buy beer, them bam, we couldn't anymore. But not that it mattered. Everywhere around here still sold us beer anyway.

Hard disagree .
Drinking and driving is an epidemic in this country.. It’s still taken way too casually IMO and i still know people in 2023 who laugh it off and say they drive better ‘after a couple of drinks’… Until someone you know is maimed or killed by a selfish-*** drunk driver, you cant even comprehend .. there needs to be MUCH more of a stigma in this country with re to drinking & driving .

Same here. Turned 18 Aug 6th, the law changed on Aug 15th, 1995. I have a brother 3 years older than me and I did most of my drinking with him anyway so I never had a problem getting alcohol.

But now you can text and drive at 16 and everything else with your phone
Just as dangerous as drinking and driving
Just as dangerous as drinking and driving

The irony is that a small-government, states-rights champion used federal money to bully states into changing state laws to what the feds saw as best.

Somebody better check their math.
Reagan wasn’t even President 33 years ago.

Slow news day I guess. And further proof that journalism is dead.
I see now the OP covered up the 2017 date in the screenshot. Never clicked the link.

But your tolerance is not the same aa my tolerance. I can drink a case of beer or liter+ of liquor and still type and spell perfectly. Whereas you would probably be passed out in a puddle of piss. The idea that .08 is the same for everybody is absurd. I went to detox for alcohol before beause I knew I would be sick coming down, and blew a .36 after I got there. When they checked a couple hours later, it had actually gone up because I chugged a couple more beers to stave off the sickness before I went in. I blew a .39 the second time. That was average drunk for me, a cop there spent the whole time talking to me and couldn't even tell I was drunk other than the breathalyzer.
People shouldn't drive drunk. But also, .08 isn't actually drunk for most people. Might as well make it 0 tolerance other than ruining people's lives because they drank 4 coors lights in 2 hours of they happened to get pulled over for a break light and the cop smells alcohol, so they test them. Driving just fine but over a theoretical limit on what constitutes as drunk. Here's a 10 dollar fine and loss of license, so now you can't get to work to make money to pay off the fine, so jail it is. Meanwhile, the cops and their friends drive over the limt every night out with the boys, but if they get pulled over they just flash their badge while getting out their idea, and it was just a misunderstanding, off they go.

And, you are exactly why there’s a problem.

It was an abuse of federal power,
no matter how good the intentions were.

Bingo .
Normally im not that much of a hard***, but on this issue i am.. With all the options out there today- Uber, designated driver, drinking at home, walking to the bar etc etc etc- there’s just no reason to ever have a sip of alcohol then get behind the wheel of a half-ton weapon… im sure there are plenty of people who feel like they are great at texting & driving too- but there is a reason that texting & driving is illegal in most places, just as drinking & driving should be .
