Rolex is a great watch. The problem with Rolex is that there are too many people who only know about Rolex and don't realize what other awesome watches are out there. So everyone who sniffs money buys a Rolex first. Doesn't mean they are bad watches. I personally don't like the look of most of them, but that goes for quite a few of the big name brands. So in reality, when people hate on Rolex, they hate because it's too popular. So you are basically a hipster, which means you are basically terrible .

Markup or price relative to cost? I've never heard a $7500 Rolex would cost the store less than $2500.

I realize that there's a big push to increase the minimum wage, but you should come back when you're making real money and we can suggest some decent watches for you. Rolex?

Prices in retail outlets are controlled by Rolex. Anyone dropping price loses distributorship.

Best bet at a reducced price one is eBay, etc

You will not be able to get a deal on a Rolex watch from an official retailer. They may throw in a watch winder, but they won't budge on price. Reason being is that Rolex will cut off any retailer who does this, as it cheapens the product. I am not saying that no-one cuts their price, but only the well established stores are Rolex dealers, and there is no need to take that risk.

I have a family Rolex and admire is. Problem is is that it does not match my personality. I went looking at purchsing one, and then saw the omega. I really like their watches. Still don't have one though...not there financially just yet.

This. Rolex has also been known to force their authorized dealers into big money remodels of their storefronts. Things like stainless daytona's and green on green subs bring higher than retail.

From what little I do know, I'm pretty confident that a dealer is making about 40% on average from MRSP.

*edit* Look into Tudor watches if you are a Rolex fan. My old man has been wearing a Tudor Black Bay lately, its a beautiful watch.

Folks who wouldn't be happy with an Explorer II either don't understand what watches are for or have little meaning in their lives besides money.

Who did you work for? I'm not calling bullshite but I've bought and sold probably close to 30 of these things over the last decade and this is no where close to any number I've heard from my friends in the industry. I can see some of the more rare models bringing that kind of money but your average DateJust or Sub is no where near that kind of mark up.

And anyway, Tag watches are the better bet.

Laughable. No way a tag holds value like a rolex.

Yes you can get a deal on a new rolex but generally not around here. Keep pushing and you may be able to get 10-15% at most. I "heard" a certain dealer on Metairie road "may" do this. I have heard Adlers and Lee Michaels will not. I have bought and sold a couple nice watches on the rolex forums and have had great experiences. Some new, some used. I like to flip watches after a while and I'd much rather save 20-30% and pay no tax if I know I will sell it a year later. There are some gray market dealers that even have new watches as well.

I love my Rolexes and am not concerned with the perception of wearing one at all. I own a Submariner & a Yachtmaster (the Sub is my everyday watch and but I rarely wear the Yachtmaster)- but won both in sales contests and not sure if I had to go out-of-pocket that I would purchase one but I do love their watches.

My local Costco (N. Scottsdale) carries a limited selection of Rolexes and knowing how closely Rolex regulates their product I wonder how Costco acquires them and can discount them so much as they are obviously not acquiring them from Rolex directly. I've seen men's and women's Datejusts there and currently they have a platinum Yachtmaster on display priced at $34K- I think list for the watch is $42K. I'm assuming they are getting them somewhere on the gray market and have heard Rolex has tried to close the pipeline of watches going to Costco but obviously have had no luck. I asked the jeweler near me who carries Rolexes and he assumes it was from Rolex distributors who went out of business.

With the way rolex shoves these watches down dealers throats, they know what they are doing and what the consequences are. Many dealers cannot sell the numbers that rolex demands and must push them out the back door to sell the pieces they need to sell to keep their dealer status. All of these watches have to go somewhere.

I worked for Tudor (parent company of Rolex)and sold directly to retailers. I know what I sold them for and I know what the retail contract prices were. Been out the time piece business for 3 years.
