Rip tides: Beach’s deaths along Dauphin Island to Destin this week

We have had 3 drowning fatalities last few days from Fort Morgan to Pensacola and God only knows how many rescues and near misses. There were also several last week, and more on Memorial Day weekend. There were likely be Rip tide fatalities every week from now until Labor Day. I think most of these were under Yellow flags.
A police officer died after jumping in to save a lifeguard who was getting drug out while saving someone else. I am not counting all the missing kayakers. Who knows what kills them.
These have to be the deadliest beach’s on the freaking planet. I don’t know what makes our beaches so prone to RIP tides, or what makes them so bad but they drown full grown sober in shape men as easily as little kids.
And no one right now is sure what are the bad areas because the hurricanes last year really changed the coastlines dramatically. So an area that has been safe for years may not be now.
We really should have lifeguards on rescue jet skis every mile or so, but that’s not happening anytime soon.
So please be very very careful. You need floatation devices, floats etc with everyone. Kids get more people killed than anything so please stay in water South of them.
It’s really bad this year and nothing will ruin your vacation worse than picking your child or loved one up from the morgue.
The water is choked full of sharks, rays etc too but they haven’t hurt anyone. It’s more than anyone has seen in many years.
To be totally frank, our beaches just aren’t safe right now. So be very very careful. I would love a week of news cast without dead vacationers but haven’t had one yet

Funny you say this. This was the scene 30 feet from our spot on Pensacola Beach just Wednesday. A swimmer went out and down in a rip tide and after hours of searching, lifeguards, a dive team, and other authorities never found the poor guy. It was surreal to witness this so close to us. Very, very tragic and put a huge damper on the rest of our trip but we did use it as a teaching moment for our six year old. The current was very strong this week, stronger than I’ve ever experienced and there were numerous times when I had to get out of the water for fear of my kid or even myself wearing out and being swept out. Yellow flags flew the entire week. The water is definitely different from years past. My wife told me if I went too far and got caught in one she was going to piss away all my life insurance money with another man that she was gonna find that same day

We are in Seagrove right now and the water is hostile. Bigger waves than I remember as a kid. I’m trying to warn my kids but they don’t take me that seriously. I explained it’s like a tornado under the water and that helped. They are wearing around the chest life jackets though and they seem to be working fine. That would be a sad way to lose someone.

Double red flags during the entire week we were in perdido (mid May). We go to the beach every year and I’ve never seen the water as rough as it was during that week

When we went to gulf shores back in November there was only one day with a green flag. That day was beautiful and we took full advantage of it. The rest of the days we played in the sand and stayed in knee deep water.

Does the "swim parallel to the shore" really work? What is causing the people to drown? The current isn't supposed to pull you under, just out to sea. But, supposedly it ends and you swim parallel and back to shore.

When you start to be pulled out to sea your first instinct is to panic and you get worn out trying to swim out of it. That’s when it gets you.

Beaches have had rip tides, undertows, sharks, rays, jelly fish, and all hosts of hazards since forever. drownings aren’t new. quit trying to keep everyone safe from everything that may harm them. That’s not how this works.

I totally get what you’re saying but I can vouch for the fact that the beach here in Pensacola is very, very different than I’ve ever experienced it and I come out here often. I’ve never seen it as rough, waves consistently as high as they have been this week, and the current as strong and consistent as it has been this week. It’s not safe at all right now.

We were in Destin 3 weeks ago. This is a picture after I got back to my family. A kid had an inflatable in red flag and got swept out. His uncle, who couldn't swim went after him. I ended up going out to get them. Wife was not happy.

Maybe people need a refresher course on what the flag colors mean. This could easily happen in under a few minutes during checkin for most places.

That condo we rented had a magnet on the fridge which I thought was helpful. But I mean how much of a moron do you have to be to not know red means stop and green means go.
