I was informed by my A/C service company's technician that a type of air filter called "media" is sold at ACME Refrigeration on Pennywood. Normally, I take (2) 20x30x1 air filters, but he said in this case, the "media" air filter is 20x30x6 and only needs to be changed twice a year.

Before I make my way to ACME next week, does anyone know of a place where I can purchase these online? A quick search didn't give me the results I was looking for.

Sounds like paint booth filters are moving into the HVAC business.
How does a 6" thick filter fit into your air return? Is it a pocket type filter?

I just use the cheap ones and change them out frequently.
I think some filters can cause too much air restriction.

That is why I only use K&N filters in my house.

I have 3 units with 4 returns. I had been using some filtrete and some that the previous homeowner left. I bought a case of each size from discount filters.com (4 different sizes). I changed them out and they all don't fit as well as the filtrete, particularly the small 12x12 in my bedroom. Whistles like a friggin train. I can hear a small whistle in one of the others. Either I'm going back to filtrete or I will try to put some tape or weatherstripping around what I have. PITA

they fit in the attic -here's the deal they market them as 6 month filters but keep in mind the surface space is the same so they are only thicker.

Once the surface space fills -air flow is restricted.

Also consider the path through 6 inches instead of 1 inch will reduce intake flow- if the air handler was not designed to accommodate this type of filter it may not be best to retrofit. Most AC guys are not engineers.

We have them in our commercial units but change them every 3 months-

I would be weary that wil make HVAC work way too hard. I've been told by every inspector and hvac guy in his never the cheapest, never the thickest filter, always mid grade that catches most crap without making unit pull too hard

Unfortunately from what I've been told, these special higher merve type filters can only be found at the local A/C place. I don't know why.

I know several people with foamed houses and their Units require these types of filters. They all have to purchase them locally.

A/C guy told me the same. I buy 4 inch filters on amazon. I get 5 for $100 and change them every 3-5 months depending on how they look.

Is this the correct name?

I was told they were "media" filters.

Have you noticed any restriction in air flow? Or any concerns?

I used one of those fancy high dollar filters and it caused my heater to not work properly. The heat exchanger was over heating due to restricted air flow. Replaced filter with a regular mid grade filter and problem solved.

We were told this by our AC guy and I heard a AC guy on the radio talking about AC unit care etc. It was local radio and the DJ asked about filters that the AC guy personally used. He said "the cheap ones". Pleated ones restrict air flow and make the AC work harder. Just sharing.
