Has anyone ever rented an RV for a family vacation?

I want to take my wife and toddler to visit Glacier NP and Yellowstone next year. I was thinking a small RV would be better than the hassle of flying with a toddler since they could get up and move around in the back.

I am used to driving long distances for work, so a 24 hour trip doesn't intimidate me.

Has anyone done something like this or know someone who did? Any rental companies to stay away from?

Better than an AirBnB in the 7th ward.

F that. I would fly if I have my choice. I am bringing an 18 month old to Ireland. If I can make that trip, you can fly to Yellowstone.

I've done it a few times and liked it, you've really got to vet the company though and make sure that you're renting what they are advertising. Some places will do the bait and switch. I would actually go see the RV in person. Mileage is a big part of the cost, you might consider flying out to a city closer to where you're going and rent there. There are also companies that will rent RVs dirt cheap to have them relocated but that's a little hit and miss unless you're pretty flexible with your schedule.

I'm pretty sure you still have to have kids buckled into car seats while moving. It may vary by state, so check into it before you let the kid run loose.

We priced it a few years ago for a possible trip with another family. With rental fees, gas, and campground fees, we figured out it would be the same price or cheaper to just rent vehicles and a house.

Well that's real fricking safe. I don't understand the mentality that just because you are in a Bus, RV, Limo, etc. that you magically can't get in a wreck and get killed....

Wear your fricking seat belt and you should be arrested if you let your toddler not wear one.

You do realize RVs get in accidents as well? What do you think will happen to your poor toddler if they are not properly restrained while you are driving?

Gas/ diesel will be expensive and you will be driving much slower than in a car. Even slower in the mountains. It will cost you more in time and expensed. This is a lose/ lose option...

Being stuck behind an RV and not being able to pass them will make you want to start punching kittens.

OP...you really want to be the most hated person on the road in that situation?

I think he's trying not to be the most hated person on the plane with an obnoxious toddler, so I guess he gets points for that.

Contrary to what many believe there isn't a lot of room to move around in a RV when actually driving, particularly one with slide outs.

Moving about is a lot like being on a boat. The thing is rocking and not easy to maneuver around without holding on to things. As other have mentioned it is unsafe to be unbuckled and not just because of an accident.

I have had a few people riding with me get motion sickness when riding in the back due to the the way the thing rocks.

I would not recommend it.

Let me clarify- by "moving around in the back" I meant that they could get up and go to the bathroom, grab some Gogurts from the fridge, and go back to their car seat.

No way in hell would I have them bouncing around in the back like its a romper room.

It sounds like we should drive to Dallas (would have to do that anyways if we rented an RV), fly direct to Boise and rent an SUV.
