re: renting a car in Cancun

About 10 years ago we went on White Trash Cruise Lines and had a stop in PDC. All of our excursions were cancelled due to a hurricane out in the gulf so we rented a jeep right there at the port. It was fairly easy to rent, but cost about $75 bucks for the day.

I rented from Easyway last year. They were great to deal with. They will pick you up at the airport, and take you to their shop.
You just need to get full coverage insurance. Somebody side-swiped us and did a considerable amount of damage to our rental one night, and Easyway didn't make a big deal about it at all.
I would definitely use them again.
We flew to Cancun for a week and drove down almost as far south as Belize to go diving. We headed back north a day before our flight out, and went to Chichen Itza. It was a great trip.

Bigger picture, why Mexico?
You do read the news? Avoid Mexico.
Costa Rica. Belize. More than several Caribbean locations.
WIN

Not worth it unless you're running drugs

Do not rent a car. Take the resorts transportation.

I felt safe the entire time. The people in these touristy areas go out of their way to please. Didn't do 5th avenue. Heard it's a lot of hasseling.

We went to Belize last year. Other plans we had this year fell through and we found a cheap trip to Mexico so we got it.

You don't need a car in Playa del Carmen whatsoever
My wife and I rode the bus to PdC from Cancun Int'l for around $7 apiece. Quick and comfortable. They leave every 30-45 minutes or so if memory serves
If you're afraid of the bus, get taxi service. Expect $40-50 each way after tip

Take taxis and the shuttle buses that pass. I wouldn't trust their rent a car system because the natives there like to try to rip off the tourists. I have seen that happen before.

Glad I started this thread. I am beginning to rethink the rental car thing.

It just seemed like a nice option to have if we wanted to go check a place out without having to get crammed in with a bunch of other folks.
Mexico is not the one if you're planning to do this. Just negotiate a price to rent a taxi as a guide for the day. He'll know all the interesting sites anyway. You don't have to be crammed in a van with other people. Just rent a small cab for you and your wife.

Playa del Carmen is much safer than Belize

We rented a car when we went to Tulum for a week. It was so stressful with Dollar Rent A Car. They try to mess with you at all times.
I would highly recommend not getting a car and just taxi it.

It was cheap for a reason. Good luck and have fun. The car service sounds like the best option.
Belize is not doable all in one week, I'd have gone back there.
World-class fishing, snorkeling, diving. BOOM!

I know folks in Belize. I know no one in Mexico.

Really? I found all the police to be pretty cool. We drove all over the place and never got messed with.
Yep. Both times in the hotel zone. You come around one of those blind corners into the setup where they drop the mats and turn it into a one lane road. They then claim that the speed limit changed and show you some bullshite map with speed zones and extort money from you even though there are no signs noting the speed limit reduction on the road.
They didn't take any money the second time because I told them I'd already been pulled over and paid (which was true). frick the Mexican police. Most crooked and corrupt country I've ever been in.

We were thinking of trying to cruise around and check out some of the ruins and such around Playa del Carmen. We don't want to be stuck at the resort all day.
I guess I should check to see if the resort offers reasonable transportation.
Practically all of them do. We were there a few years ago and went off resort for some stuff. You can taxi or take a shuttle at most places.

Approach the rental desks at the airports. Compare prices and vehicles at each one until you find a good deal. I think we rented from national each time. Take pics all around before you drive off. Have fun. Get pulled over by policia pay them 20 US. Never been pulled over though one of our group did.
