Where should I look in Baton Rouge to rent a house (not a condo, not an apartment) for $900 or less? I'd ideally like a small one or two bedroom, as it will be just me, and I'm not interested in having any roommates at this stage in my life.

Is this still realistic in Baton Rouge? I know it was possible in New Orleans up until the past two or three years.

That looks like the only house sub $900 going through a leasing agency. The rest you'll have to find through other mediums.

You'll definitely be able to find things around LSU it you don't have a problem with college aged people.

ETA: Nevermind, you'll be able to find an apartment. Not a house

One bedroom houses aren't really a thing. As far as the price, you could find that somewhere in BR, but the place or location will be kinda shitty. I mean you could probably rent a house in north br for $400 but you wouldn't want to live there

Maybe not a house in a nice area, but probably a duplex or something. If you must pay less than that you could easily get a two bedroom. It would offset the cost.

Only houses I found cheap were in the aster area off campus, but I wouldn't live there. Also I didn't look on the outskirts.

Duplex would be fine as long as I had my own side/unit. Just don't want to live in a 50 unit condo or apartment complex.

What area would be highest on your list to live in?

I would say Spanishtown (prob can't afford), Mid-City (not sure if it's still in this price ballpark or not), or anywhere in somewhat close proximity (<3 miles?) to LSU.

You will not find a house anywhere near a good part of town for that low

Eta: there was a house a few weeks ago on zillow that was $950 but it was in Denham springs.

Keep an eye on zillow and trulia for things to pop up

$900/month is fighting an uphill battle with your restrictions. You're going to end up in either a dump near lsu or in a bad neighborhood. If I were in your position, I'd look for a nice condo/townhome in the Jefferson area between Corporate and Airline. Nice central location and your not stuck paying an LSU premium to be near campus.

I manage rental properties all around Baton Rouge

Jennifer Jean was a good area in the eighties. I don't know about now. There are two duplexes there for $700 and $799 now.

I did not see any houses anywhere that fit your criteria. I saw a few but they are a long way from LSU.

Good luck

I lived in a badass duplex in the Garden District for $850/month. But, that was about 3 years ago. I regret ever leaving that place.

For some odd reason anything decent in Baton Rouge for rent is over $1,100. Not sure why.

Less than 900 will be a one bedroom, in the ghetto, or in the boonies.

Fwiw I lived with a couple of roommates in a 3BR on West Grant (about 6 blocks north of campus) for $800 circa 2003. I'd assume that's gone up a bit now and I wouldn't really suggest that area by yourself. It was 3 of us and we had things stolen on 3 different occasions and our house broken into twice.
