Wife and I are in our late 30s/early 40s. We are relocating to this area, house will be in Villa Rica, my job will be in Carrollton. I know it's not far from Hotlanta, but what's fun to do here? Best restaurants/bars?

Small towns. Raise your kids, enjoy family life. Not much else goes on there.

Where in VR? Mirror Lake?

I lived there 13 years but moved 20 miles west to Bremen in September. Still own the house but rent it now.

Do you have kids yet? The VR school system in not very good. That is why my wife and I have sent our kids to Bremen City Schools the last 5 years. Had to drive them there to drop off and pick up daily and that is why we finally moved to Bremen. Bremen City is one of the highest rated systems in the state. If you have school aged children, and education is very important to you, avoid VR schools. Three options to consider, in order of academic reputation.

1.Bremen City
2.Oak Mountain Private $$$$$
3.Carrollton City

The city schools are far better than the county schools in that area which include ( VR High, Central Carrollton, Haralson County).

The town of VR is okay. Not much in the way of good restaurants there except Gabes Downtown which is casual upscale. It is a New Orleans themes eatery. The Southern Table is pretty good but has a small menu. Trading Post Cafe is a good meat and three and Evans BBQ is pretty good. Everything else is Mexican or fast food chains. There are three sports type bars in town that are more like hockey tonks with live music. Usually country or classic rock cover bands.

A couple of great golf options In town. Mirror Lake has 27 holes and is a good course. The Frog at the Georgian is one of the better course in Ga and hosts US Open sectionals and Ga state mid-am championship.

Carrollton, is a better town as far as things to do. A lot more good local restaurants, especially on the square. Inthinkmthere are 10 places to eat on the square. The Corner Cafe has excellent deli sandwiches. Samba Loca , Blue Steakhouse, Irish Bred Pub, Max and Henry's, SAMs BBQ,Little Hawaiian, La Tratorria and a few others are on the square. There is a nice little ampitheatre on the square as well that has free concerts on the summer weekends.

Of course you have every fast food chain known to man it seems as well as Applebee's, O'Charleys, Olive Garden, etc. Lots of nice boutique shops around town as well as Mainstays you would expect like Target, Lowes, Home Depot, Tractor Supply,Belk,Hobby Lobby,etc..

The city of Carrollton has a nice cultural arts center and the town is kind of the artsy, charming stereotype of a nice southern town.

You will probably find yourself in Hiram a good bit as well. It is a lot like Carrollton but just the same distance away from VR going the opposite direction.

You will never run out of options for dining, shopping or catching a movie around the entire Hiram, Villa Rica, Carrollton area. Of course, the best attractions are a 40 minute drive east to Atlanta for thing like the Braves, Falcons, aquarium, museums, concerts, etc..

1. Carrollton City Schools
2. Bremen City Schools

3. Oak Mountain

You're spot on with everything else though.

Carrollton > Villa Rica

Both are dull unless you're a college student.

The wife and I were in Carrollton a couple weekends ago. They have a lovely little downtown square that has a few pretty nice restaurants and shops.

We went to meet up with a farmer from whom we get some of our pork and beef--good grass fed organic stuff. They have a farmers' market every Saturday there, which starts in a couple weeks.

Small towns aren't my speed, but I enjoy getting away from time to time to visit them.

Sucks for you. You'll be close to ATL, so you have that.

No Rome for me. I think I will like it there, it's very quiet. And as mentioned before, ATL is just a few minutes away.

I am strictly talking academics.

Bremen City is ranked 7th out of 178 school districts in the state. Carrollton City is ranked 57th. Bremen City is factually the best for academics in the entire West Ga area. It is an extremely demanding district in regards to academics. Every standard is higher than the state standard. For example, first graders are expected to be able to read 45 words per minute by the end of the school year under the state standard. The BCS standard for 1 st grade affluency is 60 words per minute.

However, when looking at academics and athletics combined, Carrollton City Schools are great. CHS has a sports complex second to none in Ga except for McEachern. I would feel very comfortable sending my kids to the Carrollton City schools if we were not already at Bremen.
