Is this really necessary? Has there been a trend of refs getting their asses beat at games?

quote:

create the new crime of harassment of a school or recreation athletic contest official, authorizing penalties if the referee feels in “fear of receiving bodily harm” while officiating.

Then he should make the right calls.

Parents just need to stfu and just enjoy their kid playing sports. The parents that try to involve themselves in adolescent sporting events are sad as frick.

It's amazing that even though our legislature is only part time, they still come up with the most irrelevant bills

It's head scratcher for sure. Strief and Garic were railing on it yesterday. Had some state senator on who outright admitted he just blindly voted on it and it probably was proposed because some senator kid's ref got yelled at. It sets the standard at the ref feeling in danger or bodily harm, which seems easy to abuse.

I'd present a counter bill allowing cities and municipalities to enact punitive actions, including fines, on officials that are especially and egregiously fraudulent to teams while in that locality.

The bill should allow the beating of any parents losing their minds at refs during their children’s games.

Well it does open the door for some creative "harassment."

"Hey ref, that was a great call! You should in no way fear getting your arse whipped after such a flawless performance!"

Without this what's to keep him/her from making the right call 50% of the time?

Well, I did witness first hand a dad have to be restrained after high school softball game in BR this spring, chasing down umpire in parking lot after game.

I have no problem with this bill.

We have a severe shortage of refs in many sports across the nation. The backlash they receive is ridiculous. Little league baseball may be the most psychotic out there.

yes, these referees and umpires already have too much power to control the outcome of games......now you're going to give them the power to have someone arrested for yelling at them??

This is the biggest bullshite bill I've ever seen

This is the truth. There are folks who are normally nice well respected people who turn completely psycho when it comes to their children playing sports. The behavior is bizarre. Refs have to be escorted to their cars by law enforcement sometimes. I'm fine with this. I think the refs give these people too many chances by letting them stay in the game areas too long. These heathen folks should be booted immediately.

Stick to the laws on the books. They are more than adequate.

It is dangerous to create privileged classes through this sort of legislation.

Already existed, really. Parents can be arrested for disturbing the peace if they’re raising hell on a campus. Granted, in the context of officiating, it’s a higher standard but this is to prevent threatening them.

I can’t think of a reason off hand, that warrants threatening an official.

I cant either...I've actually never seen anyone physically threaten an official or umpire

I have seen plenty of officials and umpires receive tongue lashings but nothing that would warrant someone getting arrested.
