Closing the school.
Is it location only or are their other reasons?
Why didn't they ever move it?
Your opinions???

I don't have an opinion on the issue.

Plunging enrollment. Plus, most of the kids going there needed vouchers but the students' overall test scores disqualified the school from taking the vouchers.

Because there won't be another game.
Once upon a time, Redemptorist hosted their first game too. These things happen.
The Queens of England were formerly Roman Catholic. How about starting a thread about that?

funny how schools close every year but everyone seems to cry over RHS just because they were good at football for a few years

Good link. I had no idea their test scores were that low. Why pay for education if it's going to be as bad as an EBR public school?

Well, it was a legendary basketball school in the 60s, 70s, and 80s too .. The school does have some history to it. It's not like Starkey Academy, The Gables, or Runnels is shutting down here ... It is just a sad reminder of time marching forward to a lot of people. I was just surprised that whomever started this thread hadn't heard the news yet ..

New Zachary and Central public school districts combined with a declining neighborhood and better private school options within the city choked Redemptorist to the point of failure. They were already desperate when they were going after the voucher students.

I'm amazed it made it as long as it did, in that part of town. It ceased being a viable private school a long time ago. That was a good part of BR in the 50s, 60s, and early 70s .. But, from 1975 onward it has just slid straight downhill. What killed RHS was the City of Central. When Central schools were still under EBR schools and kids were being bussed all over, parents used RHS as a viable alternative .. Once all of that ended, RHS went straight downhill.

Not " fify" just uninformed.

If Brother Martin were closing, he'd be all up in arms ..

its sad how munch and verges are treating the kids there now and how they delt with the alumni.
This whole situation is gonna leave a real bad taste for the BR diocese for a long time.

When all this started I couldn't really give a shite about it to be honest. Times change and I was shocked this didn't happen sooner. But, the manner in which the Diocese handled this is pretty deplorable from what I've read and conversations with those involved in trying to take it back from them.
But RHS had an extremely lazy and/or non-existent Alumni program. Maybe if there would have been more Alumni events and gatherings then this could have been prevented. Seems only the announcement of the closure got people excited and Alumni uniting but by then it was too late to matter much

and RHS has many many influential alumni in the business community here in BR. Plenty of stroke to get things done and save the school. There was an effort a few years back to potentially move the school not far from St. George on Siegen Lane. I don't know what ever happened with that or if it even had any real traction .. It is genuinely a shame that there wasn't enough pride in the school to keep it from withering away and dying on Plank Road ..

NOLA had schools from 1A-5A shut down by Katrina for good but I never heard as much about them lamenting it as i've heard about Redemptorist... life goes on
Posted on 4/26/15 at 11:43 am to chalmetteowl
That's because one of the blue blood schools weren't one of them ..

It's called white flight. Look at the area Redemptorist is in.

Look at the area Brother Martin is in in New Orleans .. A few of the other blue blood Catholic schools aren't in the best areas of town, but they are still viable and make it work ..
