Reading some really strange and bad stuff about this group. Anyone else?

Should our governor be contacted and informed?

I know that the Red Cross turned down many donations that were at their doorsteps this weekend because the people and entities providing the donated goods do not have contracts with the Red Cross.

Bingo. They'll let you volunteer as long as you don't interfere with their vendors supplies. I've had multiple donation attempts declined by Celtic.

Yea, they are turning people away and only accepting donations from people who have a contract with them. I know they do some good work, but there are much better organizations to donate towards. The United Way is another charity to avoid.

Red Cross not allowing outside food in the shelters. Only allowing clothing collected by Red Cross to be distributed in shelters. From what I've read, people in shelters are pretty much being treated like prisoners. A group of nurses that volunteered have been posting on FB what a horrible experience it has been. Medical necessities brought in from the outside are being trashed and those in need refused access.

They have also turned down many over qualified and over experienced medical professionals because they don't fit their "model". While the Red Cross does good work, seems to me like it's an organization is also looking out for the best interest of it's "friends".

It's probably legal issues regarding outside supplies.

I think the Red Cross obviously does more good than harm, but at this time I think donating to one of the churches who are doing some seriously good work for the flood victims is the way to go. 100% of that money goes for help.

I had a business issue with Red Cross during Katrina where they tried to renege on something that would have put extra financial hardship on my company. I got the right Red Cross guy on the phone and lit into him. They made it right.

The Red Cross addresses the most basic of medical needs, such as taking vital signs and handing out aspirin. Before they moved in, real doctors were on sight administering real medications for those in needs.

You mean an organization as large as the RC only takes items from trusted vendors to prevent lawsuits.

Surely people see what taking anything from anybody could open them up to lawsuit wise

Sorry, but even in today's litigious world, I don't see how accepting a box of clothes at your doorstep opens you up to a major lawsuit.

You have to draw the line somewhere.

And I'm sure before all of this, people were bringing in some disgusting used clothes.

Go to a church if you have items to donate

The Red Cross has become a bureaucratic, corporate entity that values itself over the interests of natural disaster victims.

I will never donate to that organization again.

Remember, just a few years ago it was revealed the CEO of the American Red Cross was making a $650,000 annual salary and the top 15 RC executives made combined salaries of $4.5 million annually.

My girlfriend who is almost 7 months pregnant was stuck at the red cross shelter. They started to run low on water the first day and started charging for it, they also had no food for 24 hours, and broken beds. I walked through 5 feet of water to get her some food and get her out. That organization was a real shite show.

Check WAFB for Red Cross statement by Nancy Malone. And, note that Red Cross wants no items donated. They want money only. I see this as a problem, does anyone else? Persons in the shelters who have lost everything cannot even benefit from a few items of clothing donated from the outside, or any other item that may bring them the slightest bit of joy in this horrible situation.
