Recent Petroleum Grad Seeking Advice

I know a lot of these threads have come up recently, but oh well here it goes.
I just graduated from LSU in August with my Bachelors in Petroleum Engineering and have been applying anywhere and everywhere since but with no luck.
My resume is good considering I have a lot of work experience over each summer. I have applied to all the major oil companies as well as the largest service companies to no avail. It seems like most of the service companies are only hiring for positions requiring 3+ years of experience with that specific discipline. I really dont know what to do. I'm currently broadening my search to look for any engineering related positions whether they have anything to do with O&G or not.
I guess I am asking for advice. Should I lower my standards and work in a roughnecking type labor intensive position while I gain experience and wait out the downturn? Or should i seek employment outside of O&G and instead work at an equipment, or industrial position? I dont know where to look.
Thanks for any help OT'ers.
Edit: Although just recently graduated, I have been on the hunt for 2-3 months before that.

You will get a bunch of BS answers. The real answer is do what you believe is best for you. If you don't know that answer do your research. This isn't the place for life advice.

Noted, but I know there are a lot of people that post here with lots of experience in the field and I figure I should exhaust all my options.

It's a rough time to be a Petroleum grad. I graduated in '08 and almost everyone in my class had jobs before graduating. A few have been laid off recently and I'm hearing recent graduates are really having a hard time getting a job.
I would
There's a lot of valuable experience to be gained out in the field.

My cousin just graduated in May and is in the same position as you.

I'd stay in the same industry if possible, even at the absolute lowest position. Get out of the industry and you're cooked.
I got an EE degree in microchip manufacturing and largely due to my graduation date, late 2000, I never got s job in the field. At some point I could have, but I had already got accustomed to my pay vs hrs a week at a regular engineering gig...and I didn't want to lose my fiancé to a 60 hr a week job.
I consider it a mistake, but I'm happy with the overall outcome. I was right that didn't want to lose her, but I think I could have made it work somehow.
Don't get out of the industry you love.

The Arctic Ocean. Obama just mandated Royal Dutch Shell to drill there all while restoring Mt McKinley to Denali and continuing his war on white people.

Tough out there for anyone in O&G.
It's not what you want to hear, but look into mud logging. People are still doing it everywhere.

Problem is there are 20 year people out of work.

What have your other friends from your program have done? Are they still looking? Do some have jobs? What did they do differently.
I'd wait for the fall recruiting process. Some departments allow recent grads to still participate. Did you do that any year before? It's great!
I have a lot of LSU connections in the petroleum engineering, but I can't necessarily introduce you to them.

They got some jobs around you up there for me?

Yea even my friends that graduated last year that seemed to be the case. I actually had a job offered to me last year in Lafayette that was rescinded after they had a lot of budget cuts. I don't know where to start when looking for these alternative labor type positions, but I am considering just driving down 90 in Laff and knocking on doors.

That's not a problem for him. That's a good thing!

All I know is that it's not good when the majors start making cuts

If you're applying for a lower position LEAVE OFF that you have a PetE degree. You're here to work is all that they need to know. I wouldn't tell anyone at work either. Learn, work, bide your time.

And they've made a lot. Buddy of mine didn't get picked up after his internship with Apache last week. Sharpest guy in our program with tons of experience and a great resume. Tough out there right now

Not in all cases. Come to the northeast. Kids straight of school running shite and frick everything up. Think they know it all.
No offense to you youngins. Some are good but experience does matter. Have seen some really stupid shite
