Ebook sales plunge 20% as printed book sale surge

quote:

New data suggest that the reading public is ditching e-books and returning to the old fashioned printed word.

Sales of consumer e-books plunged 17% in the U.K. in 2016, according to the Publishers Association. Sales of physical books and journals went up by 7% over the same period, while children's books surged 16%.

The same trend is on display in the U.S., where e-book sales declined 18.7% over the first nine months of 2016, according to the Association of American Publishers. Paperback sales were up 7.5% over the same period, and hardback sales increased 4.1%.

"The print format is appealing to many and publishers are finding that some genres lend themselves more to print than others and are using them to drive sales of print books," said Phil Stokes, head of PwC's entertainment and media division in the U.K.

Probably people trying to show off the fact they read for leisure.

No one cares

Is that perhaps due to the fact that people are using tablets instead of dedicated e-readers?

I could never read a book electronically, not sure why it just doesn't seem right.

I can tell you why e-books are declining in market share from personal experience. I've been a kindle guy since day one and have had several models.

Here's the problem...

E-books are just as expensive it not more expensive than paperbacks. I go onto amazon and see an e-book is $12.99 and the paperback is $11.99. frick that paperback every time!

Back when every e-book was $7.99 it was a lot more palatable.

I like both equally. Both have their advantages and nuances

That plus it isn't as easy to dog-ear ebooks, flip back through them, and maintain your place. OTOH, I'll never miss the clutter that comes with physical books.

It's easier to carry a kindle. I like hardcover the best but it's hard to tote around.

Plus you can buy used hard copies for pocket change and resell them when you're done.

That e-reader crap is stupid, and I'm technically a "millenial" (yuck), so I guess I'm supposed to like them.

Give me a book. Plus, I like the look of a bookshelf in a room.

You know who doesn't have at least one shelf full of books somewhere in the house? Dumbasses and lazy motherfrickers, that's who. And I'm not talking Photo albums or cookbooks either. I'm talking real, motherfrickin books.

I like to highlight and make notes in margins when I read nonfiction. Harder to do that on eReader. Now fiction fluff, I'll read on an eReader all day long.
