Because of the international dateline and the Aleutian Islands, Alaska is the Northern most, Eastern most, and Western most state.

During WWII the Germans developed a curved barrel attachment for their Stg 44 assault rifle to allow infantrymen to fire around corners without exposing themselves to enemy fire. It came in different versions ranging from 30 degree bend up to a full 90 degree bend in the barrel.

Texarkana, TX is closer Atlanta than it is to El Paso, TX
The same is probably true for Brownville, TX and the little town farthest away in the panhandle but the maps all route ATL to Texarkana through Memphis and I am too lazy to force it to cut across using Highway 82.

World War II is generally viewed as ending in May 1945 in Europe. However, the state of war did not officially end until February 1947 when the German ally and satellite states Bulgaria, Romania, Finland, Italy, and Hungary all signed the Paris Peace Treaties with France, Great Britain, Soviet Union, and the United States.
As for the war in the Pacific, it's technically still going on between Russia and Japan as they never signed an official peace treaty to end the state of war thats existed between them since August 8th, 1945.

Nero didn't play the fiddle (or harp) while Rome burned. He was actually out of town and rushed back to secure temporary housing and food supplies for those who lost their homes.
Marie Antoinette never said "let them eat cake," and, while she certainly lived a lavish lifestyle, she actually cared very much for the people of her adopted nation (she was Austrian by birth) and organized food drives for the people of Paris.
Both of these are examples of propaganda put out by opposing political groups - whose advertising campaigns were so prolific that they've infiltrated the parlance of our daily lives hundreds and thousands of years later. Food for thought the next time you hear "news" from a particular source.

And here's a good one next time someone talks about the lack of passports amongst US citizens:
The distance between El Paso, TX and Beaumont, TX is about the same as the distance between Paris, France and Warsaw, Poland.

Gil Hodges went 0 for 21 in the 1952 World Series, but did manage to get a sac fly in Game 7.
A Brooklyn priest saying Mass during that stretch: "It's too hot for a homily; keep the Commandments and say a prayer for Mr. Hodges."

Seattle is approximately the halfway point between NOLA and Anchorage, Alaska.
That's how far away Alaska is.

The second most recent year that no black artist had at least one #1 hit on the American pop charts at any point during the calendar year was 1958.
The most recent? 2013.
