Racist Airbnb host fined $5K and ordered to take Asian-American studies

It’s the first time an Airbnb host has been penalized after California regulators passed an agreement that allows officials to test Airbnb hosts for racial discrimination earlier this year.
In February, Dyne Suh, a 26-year-old law clerk, had booked a mountain cabin in Big Bear, California, for $250 a night from Tami Barker for a skiing weekend with friends. Suh had asked Barker if she could bring two friends and two dogs, and Barker agreed on the condition Suh pay an extra $50 per night.
But Barker reportedly texted Suh to cancel the reservation “minutes before they arrived,” writing, “I wouldn’t rent it to u if u were the last person on earth,” and “One word says it all. Asian.”
In a video posted on YouTube, Suh can be seen tearfully recounting her story.
“She [Barker] said ‘This is why we have Trump, we can’t have foreigners tell us what to do’ she said that to me. I’m an American citizen, this is my home, I’ve been here since I was three years old,” Suh said.

Her rant seems right out of the Bannon Nationalist Handbook for Bigots. People on the Poli Board like to say Obama divided the country, but the fact is that Trump has divided America a thousand times worse and in such an ugly way that I don't think can ever be fixed. He has taken over the Divider-in-Chief moniker and made it his own for life.

I can't for the life of me ever figure out why somebody would actually say something like that when turning someone away. Just say you are cancelling for repairs or whatever.

Yeah I don't really get this as someone who has two properties on Airbnb. Given, I don't get many asians. But most asians are very respectful of rules and clean. They wouldnt be in the top 5 ethnicities I wouldn't rent to.

Did you even read the article? It clearly states she was fined by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH), the state's fair housing regulatory body, to prevent exactly this type of people from discriminating against other people based on race.

As a follow up: I'd be fine if Airbnb banned her. I'm not in support of the state criminalizing beliefs. And her airbnb is a private property, not an open-to-the-public establishment. So the rules that ban restaurants etc from not discriminating do not apply
