And nearly 100 years later we're a bunch of pussies, who can't go 5 minutes without getting their feelings hurt or 5 minutes without wifi.
Our armed services are still stocked with bad mother frickers.

9. “Prisoners of war under American jurisdiction continue to send home glowing reports of good treatment. It is clearly deducible that they are more satisfied with their present condition, than they would be at home
Reminds of the stories of the German POWs in Kansas in WWII who essentially became semi-free citizens of the town instead of just being behind bars all the time. They were even offered classes at the U of Kansas.

I think there is a person in Roberts Cove, LA who's father was a German POW.

There was a German POW camp in Excursion Inlet about 30 miles from here. Germans were pretty free but there really wasn't anywhere to go. A couple did escape.
The native village of Hoonah reportedly has descendants of these POWs. Some of the natives born shortly after had less than native features and a couple had blue eyes.

LSU classmate's Dad was a German POW. Stayed here after the war and assimilated well.

My dad was friends with two Italian POWs who were imprisoned at the camp where UNO is now located. Both of them married American nurses from the camp hospital.

I always found this movie exchange very interesting.
Starman
Jeff Bridges

quote:
Mark Shermin: Have people from your world been here before?
Starman: Before yes. We are interested in your species.
Mark Shermin: You mean you're some kind of anthropologist? Is that what you're doing here? Just checking us out?
Starman: You are a strange species. Not like any other. And you'd be surprised how many there are. Intelligent but savage. Shall I tell you what I find beautiful about you?
[Shermin nods]
Starman: You are at your very best when things are worst.

Some of you need to read more closely. This post is about WWI, not WWII.
The American army in WWI was not up to the standards of our European counterparts. The Europeans had been fighting a stalemate in the trenches for 3 years when America finally sent troops.

quote:meh. it was a humongous army with over one million men that had been trained. there were supply issues, sure, but the united states military circa 1918 was a very capable one that could have easily sustained a prolonged war in europe. thats why americas entrance was such a big deal. it was the worlds most powerful nation in terms of industry and economic might becoming involved and didnt have to deal with all the issues that the germans, french, and english had to deal with after years and years of war
