I have a friend who checked into the one in downtown BR today (Florida Blvd, I think). He has had a pain pill problem for a while and he agrees that this is the best for all involved. I am glad his attitude is good about it. I believe he plans to stay for 2 weeks.

Questions:

-Is 2 weeks long enough?
-Is that a good place to be? Is that center known to be effective?
-How long do they have to be in before they can make phone calls? I heard they have a pay phone, so we gave him a bunch of quarters. How long til we can hear from him?

Well since computers aren't allowed in the detox center, it can't be me posting from there...

Before all the hacks on the OT Lounge invade, I'll throw in my two cents.
I did 45 days in a treatment center out in Chaneyville, LA. I have been sober for 16 months, and it made a world of difference. 2 weeks, in my opinion, is not enough. I wasn't locked in really until week 3 or 4. First 2 weeks was just listening to others and getting used to being away from home/real world.
We were able to make phone calls after 7 days, and had to have a prepaid card to be able to call out, and had a 10 minute max on total overall calls. I don't know anything about this certain place, but he should consider doing more time if possible, and frequent AA meetings as often as he can.

Two weeks is too long. You could relapse in that timeframe.

The detox center serves a purpose. But I'm not going to bullshite you. That place has some shady characters. Almost like being in parish prison.

Lady of the Lake has a real good program

Edgeview in Chenneyville is a good one too.

2 weeks is a waste of his time. Sorry, your friend needs several months away from his painkillers and isolated from his current environment. Now, there 2 problems the physical and mental addictions he will experience. The physical is the easy part because the meds will be out his system after a few weeks but it's the mental.

Drug users/ alcoholics use substances to change their mood or feelings about themselves. That's why it's important to be out his environment so counsellors can help him focus triggers and what's really bothering him. My bet is he's got some real shite he doesn't want to deal with and that can't be processed and vetted through within 2 weeks.

You can go I/O/P inpatient outpatient program with meetings and drug testing done each meeting. St James Behavioral in Gonzalez has a good program. The minimum is 3 days a week with a 6 week program. I wouldn't recommend without a significant inpatient program first. At least do a month inpatient then move to I/O/P for at least 4 weeks. My 2 cents

Is it the one with the radio commercials that are like

I wish my dad would want to play with me without having to do drugs first.

I wish my big sister would stop stealing my grandmother's pills?

I personally know the owners and the staff at Edgefield Recovery Center

I am extremely happy to hear about your success story even though we both know it's a fight everyday. The Recovery Center you go into isn't about that Rehab but about YOU wanting to get better for yourself and family.

I think it depends on the facility. I was able to talk to my family member each day at a specified time but we did not talk until he went into the general living quarters- first few days were spent under supervised withdrawing.

As for time frame, I think 45+ days is optimal but again, depends on the addiction and if he/she can be away that long. Of course, one could question why you would not invest that much time to get your addiction under control.

A lot of programs put you in a halfway house for a few weeks (after your inpatient stint) and suggest you continue a daily out patient therapy.

Not familiar with the place on Florida.

Good luck to your friend!

If he's just there to detox, 2 weeks would be plenty. Rehab should be a month, minimum, imo.

the only important question, is he from Baton Rouge?

If so, a two week local rehab is setting fire to cash for warmth

90 days min. 30 days just to get your body back to normal. Then you deal with the psychology of it all. After that, you learn ways to not use drugs. It's more complicated than people think. My son's been sober for 9 months. Good luck to your friend.

Right. The folks at that place may give a referral to CARP or another state-funded rehab if he needs to go that route. But if he has insurance or family that can pay, he needs to get out of here.

Detox is not rehab.

Looks like we have a lot of junkies posting on the OT.

Most likely, all your friend is gaining from the 2 week rehab experience is more people to call to get smack from.

ETA: Need Sampson or SuperSaint to come in here and talk about the relapse process and the subsequent sucking dick for dope because they felt like they were dying without it.

If his buddy is detoxing off pills, his next two weeks will be dope sick and hating the world.
