Question for thos wit large breed dogs that stay outside

How do you guys handle the winter/spring rains? My backyard turns to a giant mud pit every year from December through April. I have tried planting rye grass, but my GSD annihilates it after the first rain of winter. I have laid out bundles of pine straw and hay, but would take several truck loads to do the rick. Looking for any pointers you guys may have. TIA.

My Great Dane stays inside. I would be a serious pain in the arse to keep him outside with all of the mud. Have a heart and bring them in.

I do have a heart. That's why he stays outside.
Seriously, he is miserable inside to the point where he starts to look depressed.

Do you have a front yard to where you can put an electric fence and maybe let back yard dry up?

Buy a few feet of chain.

Rye Grass.
And a frick ton of it.
I buy a 50lb bag every October for a yard that is probably 35x60'. Let the average ground temperature hit less than 80 degrees. Put down 1/3 of the bag. Then about every 2-3 weeks I throw say 4-5 lbs into my Scott's seed spreader and cover most of the yard and particularly the bad areas. Rye grass grows soo fast that with a decent rain every week and the right temperatures, it'll come up within a week. And it's THICK.
50lb Vizsla
90lb Retired Racing Greyhound.
Vizsla has to stay outside EVERYDAY or she's unbearably energetic aggravating and gets herself into trouble. The greyhound only stays out in perfect weather (60-80 degrees)
yeah. i have to cut, weedeat, and blow the backyard every other week. but it keeps the dogs from tracking in a pound of mud every day.

I walk him daily, sometimes chaining him in the front yard to hang out, but it doesn't keep him from running like a horse once he gets in the backyard. Spends most of his time chasing squirrels and rabbits behind our fence. I suppose I could trap them, but they provide 90% of his entertainment.

That might be my issue. I didn't put down enough of it and I certainly didn't put it down often enough based on your recommendation.

I'm not kidding you.
I buy it from Tractor Supply. 50lb for $30
I've gone thru a bag and a half since early October.
on a side note. Old men always warn me about cranking my lawnmower, weedeater, and blower during the winter months and not letting gasoline separate. With that much rye grass....not a problem.

My English Cream Golden digs everywhere. Just try to pull in the holes where he digs all the time

tips for that too.
red pepper flakes (from Dollar Store)
pea gravel
dog shite.
i mix this with some top soil to fill in the Vizsla's holes. Next time she starts digging in that spot she finds a nice smelly and spicy surprise. Plus she isn't crazy about dirt with a bit of gravel in it.

My dane, lab, and pit all stay inside. There is no easy way to deal with your problem other than letting the poor dog inside so it doesn't have to run around in the mud.

Rye grass is the answer; but you should go to your local landscaper and get a roll or two of the straw mats that have the seed embedded in the straw.
This will help with the mud while the seed takes and will keep the seed from washing away.

It's a dog. It probably enjoys running around in the mud.

He only gets miserable inside because you or a family member are not spending any time exercising him outside.
Wear him down. Not just a walk. I mean wear him down to where he can no longer walk. And then bring him inside when it is cold.
It works.

Why not get a small kennel run for the back? I keep my dog in mine during the day and he's much happier than when he's in the house. I think mine is a 10x6

Is your yard holding water puddles? If it is, maybe try to install one or 2 catch basins in parts of the yard that hold water and some flexible pipe to carry the water to street or somewhere it can drain

I have a tin roof over the house and pin.
When it gets cold I use tarp and plywood to keep warm
My beagle/border collie and mix black lab would tear the house up

i'll let you babysit our 10 month old Vizsla, let know how that game plan works out for you.
