Or anybody else who has to bill time to different clients. What was your % utilization for 2015? We had a slow year, so I didn't come anywhere near my 85% target.

I don't even calculate it like that to be honest. I have a series of billable hour requirements, which I met.

I hate the way we do it. We get penalized for taking paid sick/vacation. I think there might be 1 associate that actually hit 85 but the managers get stingy with the work when it's slow for obvious reasons. I'm also a new hire so I get the scraps.

If you aren't billing 40 hour days you aren't trying hard enough.

The key is whether it is in your control or not. If your firm didn't land enough work to keep folks busy (and you aren't responsible for selling work), then hard to fault you. On the other hand, if there was plenty of work and either (1) the "internal market" didn't want to use you for some reason, or (2) you just didn't do as much work as others, them maybe it's more of a you issue.

I landed an in-house position with a major client this last year so I didn't have to worry about it, which was really nice. I just signed for another year, so 2016 will be at least 100% billable.

Honestly, it has been so nice not having to worry about billable hours that I will probably just look for a position with a company whenever this in-house position is done.

You live the dream. I have to fight for work with 6 other associates right now.

~60% of our business is consulting O&G projects so we're definitely down but i'm not sure I should be this slow.

hope to god it's neither of these

My goal when I was in it was 85% but that never happened in my service line. I worked on a lot of BD work that wasn't billable. Those metrics are fabrications anyway since you have to eat hours on projects and can't ever charge what you actually worked.
