the best and most factual biographies and memoirs about famous military leaders are usually written by their orderlies.

If you're hand picked by a GO you're at the top of your peer group normally.

You're uncle was also SF. That is a peer group entity in of itself. You don't stay in the AOC if you get peered out.

He had to be sharp in order to be an aide.

May I suggest you listen to General Stanley Mcchrystal on the Tim Ferris Podcast? His aide de camp, a former Navy Seal, is on with him. You get a good appreciation of the relationship.

From what he did tell me he wanted to go but I think his General wanted him around.
I should google General of Bragg during Vietnam.

AOC = Area of Concentration (his job).

Peered Out is where your peers get you removed because they evaluate you poorly.

So soldiers of his same rank/peer group would have to support him having that position?

So are y'all saying that my uncle was respected by his superiors AS WELL AS his peers?

No. That speaks solely to him being SF. In certain units if your peers think you suck, you're gone and transferred else where.

Seems like he was respected in his field.

Enough so a General Officer (GO) wanted him as his Aide de Camp.

Yes, essentially.

Like most have said before, you don't get to work for a GO if he thinks you suck.

So you're saying another SF or another Ranger to take it to another level can "veto" another soldiers candidacy to be a member of that unit?

Wow. Thanks Soldier. I've always wondered.

Thanks to all of you, and thanks for your service.

Pretty much. More so throughout their training, though.

Let me also say I am not tabbed (SF or Ranger qualified)

I don't know from experience; only from friends and acquaintances that were.

Being a General's orderly is typically something reserved for Soldiers that are top notch as it can be a career maker in the Army. If your uncle was one, he served honorably and to a very high standard.

An orderly is an extremely demanding position usually reserved for Soldiers that have demonstrated a record of success and thought to have much potential. Also, an orderly is not a personal servant or or anything like that (forbidden by law), rather an orderly supports the senior officer's professional aspects of his life.

I look at them almost like a paralegal. They are the ones that know some shite and do the real work of making sure everything is squared away.
