So I shop at Rouse’s a good bit, and have always noticed an LEO standing guard in the store. I used to think that they were probably bored out their minds, but then I realized that any officer would probably take a Rouse’s guard shift any day over having to deal with something like a domestic disturbance.

How true is that? Are there certain posts that you covet when you’re a LEO? How does it work, as far as where you’re assigned?

Off duty police officers pulling security is over time money. Rouses is footing the bill

They’re working a detail. They pick up extra shifts to make extra money. Details tend to be pretty relaxed and low stress.

Overtime in most precincts is assigned by the co.

Some is personal preference i.e. distance from home, eye candy, ease of duty.

Some is just financial- I.e. 5 hours minimum pay for a 3 hour assignment

ETA- nobody likes working domestics, so yes Rouse’s beats the shite out of that.

Not LEO, but it does seem like domestic disturbances cause more officer shootings and deaths than anything else. Woman calls cops on man, LEOs go to detain man, woman re-considers her choices and causes shite with LEO to protect the dude she called LEO on to begin with.

That's my non LEO understanding.

Let me ask you about that. I've had partners in New York assign a single woman (under 25) to do an inventory audit in Juarez. Do LEO jurisdictions generally pay a *little* bit more attention to safety than that?

I’m not sure I understand the question, but not all c/o’s are of the same pedigree.

Some take skills sets and assignments based on the appropriate skills. Others apply or more equity based approach and assign based on their assumption that anyone who was issued a badge is capable of performing the duties.

They’re always walking into a hornet’s nest on those calls. More than once shots have been fired at LEO as soon as they arrive on seen.

Even “routine” domestic calls can be tough. They still witness families in their worst moments, children crying, etc.

If you send a single woman into northern Mexico, it feels like you're asking for a kidnapping, especially if you are wearing fancy clothes and don't appear Latin. I was more referring to civilians and dumb shite they shouldn't do, or be asked to do. I think I got crossed between talking to both of you, my bad.

They tried to send a 22 year old from one of the coasts, no LEO background, to audit a warehouse in Juarez, or Nuevo Laredo or somewhere, by herself, I was was the only person who thought it wasn't a good idea to send her by herself.

My old company wouldn't let me go to Lagos without a lead and a trail car of armed guards (ten years ago,) but a different company was willing to send a single woman to Northern Mexico alone? She didn't know any better, she probably studied accounting at Stanford or something.

Best answer for you is, don’t call the police if you should need them.

I imagine they're the worst. ODMP seems to confirm. I hate it for y'all. I feel like if I was setting my back hair on fire while puking, I'm going to be a lesser risk than some woman screaming "he hit me." You never know what is going on behind you with the supposed non threat.

The shite we've seen with bodycams and neglected kids recently...

I've heard they stand around there because Rouses is a great place to cruise for gay sex.

My favorite off-duty gig is at a local church. They primarily just want the presence of a police vehicle parked in front of the door, but they give me a radio in case anything breaks loose (which it never has). They pay me $65/hour to sit in my car and surf TD for 3 hours.

I also enjoy working the high school football games in the Fall. Instead of paying to get in and paying for food and drinks, I stand at the back of the endzone and get fed for free on top of getting a check.

To the LEO’s responding to this thread, I know there’s no such thing as heroes as we’re all adults and have our faults, but hats off to you as I can’t imagine the type of shite you have to deal with given the growing number of violent degenerate weirdos that are out there in the world right now.

I am not a LEO but my stepdad was and I have several friends who are or were.

I am not sure how it works with those gigs. I do know a lot of departments let guys work security in their off-duty hours in uniform and with their cruisers if they take them home.

As for domestic calls, cops all hate those. The situations are never good and completely unpredictable.

Friend in mine is a cop. There is a local methadone clinic offering detail job. No one want to take it: dealing crazy walking zombies.. no thank you

Like everything else in New Orleans this stuff has gotten corrupt before: guys calling in sick to the shift to take detail work or just sleeping in their shift because they are working detail in their off hours and not sleeping. NOPD made some changes to their detail process few years back though. NOPD just does straight up payroll fraud now.

You always want an extra job where the business thinks they need you but they don’t.

As posted above they are working a detail. I do details at work Thursday through Sunday nights at $45/hr. It's a rotation of 3 officers mostly and they pay their mortgage in one week off of me. Some details are shite to them and they charge more but mine is am easy one. They get fed, walk around talking to people they know, walk the girls out, deal with an occasional drunk or out of towner
